For Honor TEST: Does it have a very Middle Age flame?
For Honor , the new license from Ubisoft has just been released, and suddenly as promised, our test follows suit. A game that allows us to gambol happily between Vikings, Knights and Samurai, all obviously in a fictional environment but also and it must be confessed enough enjoyable. Is this enough to make a good game? This is what we will see. Verdict!
For Honor is a multiplayer action game that allows us to embody 3 types of warriors among the most famous in the History of Humanity: Knights, Vikings and Samurai. If the title is essentially multiplayer and this part is the main interest, it is important to note also the presence of a single player campaign. Be careful, do not expect a great story made of many twists. It should rather see in this adventure a good way to identify the background of the game and especially to master each of the characters available through 3 different campaigns on the background of the millennial war.
Mastery is the key to success
Indeed in For Honor , it is necessary to master his character, because it is a punitive and uncompromising title that leaves no room for error, a bit like a Dark Souls . Composed of 12 characters or 4 per camp, each with its own characteristics and role to play on the battlefield . In the camp of the knights, the sentinel is for example a very versatile character whereas the emissary, sort of thick brute, is ideal to lead beautiful counter-attacks and dizziness with the help of his big halberd. So, rather than constantly playing one or the other class, it is better to master one character before playing another one.. Nothing more enjoyable than to fully understand all the roughness offered by one of these warriors to make a real killing machine rather than ruminate on our defeat by changing roles in every game.
"What is your favorite color?" "Blue! No ... red! AAAARGHHH !!!"
To master a character and feel fully involved, nothing better than a good customization system. And that's good because For Honor offers a large and comprehensive tool for changing both armor elements and the color of his cape. Obviously if you change your headset it will have an influence on the statistics but note however that it is also possible, as in an MMORPG to apply the skin from one object to another while retaining its characteristics. A way to perform but always with class.
To unblock armor components, we have several ways:
- Unlock by farming and winning rewards at the end of each match
- By dismantling objects to recover resources and then "crafting"
- By recovering items in exchange for steel , the game currency
Because yes at the end of each match we get an in game currency of the name "steel" that can unlock characters, skills and almost everything in play including war paintings, adding unique colors and symbols to your armor.
It is gold, gold to wake up
If everything is unlockable by increasing levels and random loots at the end of each match, there is still an online store that can make eyebrows. If the game is clearly not a pay-to-win, it still offers to buy steel against euros and therefore to be able to thirty euros unlock all the abilities of each character and more again. If the principle is more and more common it allows any one to say to privilege the players having the well stocked purse. In short, offer micro-transactions for a game that you pay full pot, it can growl. Even if the interest of the game is clearly not there. Since we are talking about faults, let us also mention the system of matchmaking and overall server completely with strawberries. On PC and consoles, it is extremely difficult (for the moment anyway) to find a part and it is common to wait several minutes to find one. Especially since sometimes even being in battle, the server can suddenly crash and force us to return to the main menu ... A patch should solve the problem. Recall that it but it's still stain for a launch, especially after many betas to several million players.
An arm cut? A scratch!
Fort (honor) fortunately, the game has enough qualities not to hold him to rigor, starting with the combat system that is the keystone of the draw. The operation is simple, the attack and the parade work together. 3 combat positions are possible: right, left, up. An indicator of geometric shape then indicates the positioning of the enemy thus making it possible to know which direction it takes to strike, thus helping you to anticipate the parry but also its own attacks. In short, it's all about timing, and that's why the game is very punitive. No margin of error is accepted, and 1 second more or less can make the difference in a duel. Especially since each map has many traps and obstacles like fire or crevasses, or just a cliff edge.
We must not only anticipate the attacks of the opponent but also pay attention to his footwork to avoid falling into the void. To make matters more complex, it is possible to break the opponent's guard, and usually on the brink of a precipice that results in certain death for one or other of the belligerents. To hope to take over, do not hesitate to perform combos that can be just as deadly. As in a pure fighting game, it is sometimes very difficult to chain the shots if your opponent is hyper-responsive and as many say it right away, getting upset will only make things worse ... Cherry on the cake at the end of a duel we can achieve a fatality , just to show who is really the boss!
If the game is as playable on PC as on console, the controller will have a clear advantage on the rotation speed of postures of combat thanks to the analog stick, the rest resting on the tastes and the colors of each one.
Beautiful content, but a little light
If there is nothing wrong with the characters, which are numerous and complementary, however we can be reluctant about the number of maps and game modes. There are 4 game modes , two of which are exactly the same.
Dominion is a capture Conquest zone Deathmatch divided into skirmish (mixed team) and Disposal (last man standing), Brawl and D ual that are identical in all respects except that one plays like its name indicates it in 1 vs 1 and the other one in 2 vs 2. In short, nothing really innovative, especially since the main problem is the number of maps. If there are several variants (summer, winter, rainy, etc.), they are still few and we look forward to a little more diversity. Good news, the game will offer free content throughout his life (maps, heroes) . Like Battlefield 1it is possible to impose "contracts" in the form of high-facts like ending a match without dying for example, against rewards it goes without saying. There is also an Events mode that we do not know for now but that must be part of the faction combat system.
In each mode of play we can find on the maps powers-ups (as in Star Wars Battlefront ) to have a nice advantage on the ground as a health boost, boost defense or attack . If it does not change drastically the course of the match, it can save you from disastrous situations.
"They had to eat a minstrel, but the joy did not leave them"
When we start the game, after a short tutorial we must choose his faction between Knights, Samurai and Vikings. This is part of faction warfare mechanics that can attack or defend territories using resources that are recovered in combat. The event mode should therefore encompass all these aspects. For the moment even if a certain repetitiveness can occur after a dozen hours of play, we feel a pleasant feeling of joy after each game.
Visually, on PC as on console it is a small technical and artistic enchantment even if it is very uneven in terms of textures according to the places. Finally special mention to the irreproachable animations, brutal and badass to wish. The multiplayer charging screen with the charge just before the start of a match is epic and no one expects less from For Honor . A consecration at the level of animations you are told. The music if it is rather discreet in game, is really nice ... in the main menu as for almost all the rest of the sound effects.
Beautiful risk, For Honor is a new genre in itself and offers technical game mechanics to make the competition blush. If the title is not free of defects (micro-transaction, slightly light content ...) it has the merit of proposing something new, in a video-fun environment overloaded by modern and futuristic war. With an artistic direction and a technique almost irreproachable, the game has all the cards in hand to afford a bright future, especially as the real competition is a bit nonexistent in this area. 12 characters for 12 different ways to play, that's the highlight of For Honor and that will allow him to hold over time, especially as other content (maps, heroes ...)
WE LIKE | WE DO NOT LIKE |
---|---|
* A very good concept | *Repetitive on the medium / long term |
* An artistic direction of hell | *Not enough maps and game modes |
* Many characters | * An online store with micro-transactions and all its horrors |
* Technically successful | * A strawberry matchmaking |
* The exhilarating fight | * Disconnections of all kinds during the multi |
