How I got into First Person Shooter (FPS) video games.

This is going to be a two part series explaining how I got into playing FPS games from the start until where I am at today.

You can read the second part Here

As this is my first long blog post, any thoughts or feedback are appreciated so please let me know in the comments.

When I was younger I didn’t have any access to any electronic games, and I didn’t even know what the Internet was.
The first time I ever saw a video game was probably when a family friend showed me his SEGA Master System 2 in around 1993 and then his Sony Playstation a few years later.

I never played much, I only used to watch him play as he was a few years older then me at the time.
I eventually played Tekken against him on his Playstation, which I can remember to this day. He later on showed me DOOM on his MS-Dos PC.
At the time I was quite young and probably wouldn’t have been allowed to if my mum had known at the time.
There was something about when I watched my friend play DOOM that seemed very different from other games like Sonic and Tekken.
The game looked like it was hard to beat and compared to the other games I had seen it looked like it took a lot more skill.

A week or so later my mum, and my friend’s mother went to a flea market where they used to have a stall and sell things every now and again.
There was someone selling an Atari 2600 console with about 20 different games all for $12 at the time.
My friend’s mother ended up convincing my mum to get it for me, as she saw that I really enjoyed the SEGA at their house.

When I was a bit older I got an N64 for Christmas. The only game I had at the time was Mario Kart.
Eventually my older brother borrowed Goldeneye 007 from a friend of his, which my brother and I played on and off for weeks.
Around the same time I had been playing DOOM 2 at a friend from schools house on his PC. It felt rather strange playing a shooting game on a console and then on a PC.
At the time I didn’t really think much of it, as I didn’t know that Goldeneye had auto aim for most of the time that I played it.
I always wondered why the games on the PC felt much harder then on my N64.

When I was in year 6 at primary school a few friends of mine decided to go to an Internet Café in the city, to play a game called Counter-Strike.
This was the first time that I had played CS, it was version 1.0 and was just out of beta.
I didn’t really understand the concept of the game, but it was a really fun experience, and brought me back to how it used to feel to play DOOM, which felt rather difficult but was
also a fun challenge.

One of my friends that I went to the Internet café with decided to try and install the game on his PC at home, as he had 56k internet at the time.
We ran around on his computer a bit, but it just wasn’t the same as it was at the internet café, as there was no one to play against as he couldn’t update the game to be able to play on the internet.

My dad bought me a computer a year or so later which also came with the Half-Life series, which at the time I didn’t know had anything to do with Counter-Strike.
I played the game and the expansions and completed them all and really enjoyed them.

Thank you for reading so far, part two will be out in the coming days so stay tuned.

There's a lot of games in there that take me back.

In our house hold it started off with an Atari, followed by a Sega Master System and then we got a 386 PC. I remember watching mum and dad play dos games then Wolfenstein 3D and Doom came out which were game changers and helped build the FPS genre. I'm definitely a PC gamer but over the years I spent a lot of time playing on my friends Sega Master Drive before getting a PS1. There were some great games on the Playstation and my two favourite single player games of all time (Final Fantasy 8 and Final Fantasy 7) were on that platform. I have a PS4, Xbox One and SNES mini classic but I don't ever play on them they're more for my partner.

I'm a PC gamer through and through and currently play a lot of PUBG, hearthstone and still occasionally play a bit of CS with @julienghost :)
