Como a série Mega Man, o Azure Striker Gunvolt é um jogo de plataforma de ação em 2D. O jogador controla o Gunvolt homônimo, que é capaz de saltar, correr e utilizar uma arma com balas especiais que "marcam" os seus alvos, o que garante um efeito de referência para os campos elétricos de Gunvolt.
