Hello everyone and welcome to my review on the game, Resident Evil 7. Resident Evil has been one of my favorite game franchises since I was a kid playing the original on the Playstation 1. These games are known for their creepy atmosphere, their monsters and most importantly the survival horror aspect. Usually you're placed in a situation where you have no obvious way out, are being stalked by creatures, and don't have enough ammo to just shoot everything that gets in your way. This makes you conserve your ammo and think about a strategy, which is the whole point of a resident evil game. I'm not positive, but I think this franchise is where the term survival horror came from back in the mid 90's. Resident Evil 0, 1, 2, 3, and Code Veronica all had the same style of game play and are some of my favorite games ever made. But then they changed direction with 4 into a third person style action shooter game.
Resident Evil 4 wasn't a bad game by any standards but it took the franchise into the action over survival horror direction which got progressively worse. When 5 came out it had almost none of the hallmarks of the older games, and 6 was such a mess I almost gave up on the series entirely. But much to my surprise when the demo for Resident Evil 7 came out I was happy to find the game was actually looking good. It had changed to a first person perspective, which some people didn't like, but more importantly it had the creepy atmosphere back. Then when the final game was released I couldn't wait to dig into it.
In Resident Evil 7 you play as Ethan Winters. Your wife, Mia, has been missing for three years, gone without a trace. Suddenly out of nowhere you get a video message from Mia telling you that she's alive and is being held captive in an old house down in Louisiana. So obviously Ethan goes down there to search for his missing wife, but this never turns into the damsel in distress story, it's a story of survival. When he gets to the dilapidated manner, he finds his wife and tries to get her out of there, but something's not right about her. In a truly terrifying scene, Mia turns on Ethan and attacks you viciously chopping off one of your hands. Whatever happened to Mia during those three years one thing's for sure, she's not the same person she was anymore.
Now your focus is on getting the hell out of this house and finding help, but your not alone in there and escape is not possible. You find out that this is the Baker residence and the Baker family is in here with you. The father Jack Baker attacks you as you try to leave out the garage. Even though you shoot him repeatedly and run him over with a car in the garage, it only slows him down enough for you to retreat back into the house to look for another way out. Something is seriously wrong with this family and it's looking more and more likely your not going to escape this nightmare.
Out back of the main house is another building you can search for weapons, health, or a way out. Unfortunately this is where the mother Marguerite resides and she's no more welcoming then Jack was. Along the way you find various guns and items to try and defend yourself with. Sometimes you come to a locked door or dead end where you need to figure out some kind of puzzle or retrieve a specific key in order to progress. This is exactly how the older games were set up. Basically you're free to roam around at your own risk, but can only move on to the next area after finding a certain item or figuring out a puzzle. All the while you are being stalked by the unflinching Baker family and the zombie like "Molded", these black sludge looking creatures.
I'm very happy to see this game return to it's roots, with great creepy atmosphere, and an emphasis on survival horror, instead of the action shooter route. The whole time I played this I was on edge and really enjoyed exploring the Baker compound while trying to find a way to save my wife and hopefully escape. There is a section at the end where the game gets bogged down a little where you go into a flashback. It's kind of necessary though to explain the back story of the Bakers and how your wife Mia ended up there. The icing on the cake with Resident Evil 7 is the fact that if you have the PSVR headset, you can play the entire game in VR. I have yet to try this as I'm not quite sold on VR enough to drop $500 for one, but I hear it's amazing, and when I do pick up a headset I'm certainly going to play this game again with it. Resident Evil 7 was a great game and a big step in the right direction, very happy to see Capcom finally getting it right again. I give this game a final score of...

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my review on Resident Evil 7, I hope you enjoyed it!
Nice review man. I loved the RE franchise early on but felt they somehow lost their way during the middle too. Glad to hear that is it turning round again. and I might just have to check this out.
I didn't think there were many people who are into gaming on this site as I posted a blog giving away free games but no one was interested lol.
Great review! I would recommend warning for spoilers on this one since some of the surprise encounters are part of the horror. I am starting a new weekly Steemit game review series where I catalog all the best reviews of the week. can I include yours?

Hello very nice review.
I played almost every resident evil games except the 7 so i can't wait to try it.
Even if the franchise did change many things to the original games, i did love resident evil 4 / 5 and even the 6 episode.
I liked them to, but I missed the old school ones.
Great review. Well written and full of information!
Great post! Would you mind if I included it in today's "best of gaming"?
I would be honored, thank you!
