Classic Gaming | SNES Super Punch Out: A heavy hitter!

I am a gamer and have been all my life, for years my focus has been modern titles for PS4, and though I still love that console, SNES classic is pulling me in deeper lately.

So many great titles, so filled with warmy good nostalgia!

The North America Super Nintendo Classic, released September 2017, came pre-loaded with the following titles, many of which were favourites of mine growing up.

• Final Fantasy VI[A]
• F-Zero
• Kirby Super Star
• The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
• Mega Man X
• Secret of Mana
• Star Fox
• Star Fox 2[B]
• Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
• Super Mario Kart
• Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
• Super Mario World
• Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
• Super Metroid
• EarthBound
• Kirby's Dream Course
• Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
• Super Castlevania IV
• Super Punch-Out!!

Nearly all of these titles are truly classic, excellent and worth playing today, but a select few have captured my attention the past few weeks including: Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World, Mario RPG, Super Mario Kart, Earthbound, Megaman X, and of course Super Punch Out!

Super Punch Out: A Heavy Hitter!

Super Punch Out is not beautifully drawn and colourful, great sound effects and genuinely cool music, add to that great controls and really individual, unique, opponents with a style and flavour all their own... this game is excellent.

Opponents like Gaby Jay who meekly shouts "Yay!" before he fights. #LOL

And look at the hilarious text based comments on Jay's 'Fighter Card':

• Weight: 110 lbs
• Record: 1-99
• "Let me wing. I've lost so many times I forget how winning feels."

And every opponent is like this, they all have their little niche, style, and background that makes them interesting and funny.

• "Bear Hugger", from Canada, weighing in at 440lbs, wearing blue jean overalls!
• "Masked Muscle" a luchador, de Mexico, complete with full face mask.
• "Hoy Quarlow", a 78 year old, Chinese man who begs you to take it easy on him, but carries a weapon into the ring!

Conclusion:

This game has a rich and diverse pool of opponents, each of which pose a unique and serious challenge in their own right, and which make the game a challenge and therefore rewarding to play through even today.

If you never played this title, you should. If you do not own a SNES original, I'd recommend picking up a SNES Classic, it comes fully ready to roll, with two controllers and all the above noted games, each of which is worth your time.
