Also, when does the game check if the mines explode. After we move on to a space, after the board rotates? Both?

You can fight any time 2 people are in the same space. So the 2 that started together 'could' have chosen to attack rather than move.
Mines explode if you step on one (so never move to one) and also when they move to you (bad luck). In theory, you could lose 2 points in one day by moving to a mine and then having another move to you.
