I played some of the games which are known for their toxic community.
I think you are right at some point, if looots of people start playing a game just because it is hyped its community will almost certainly be sh*t.
Too competitive games grow a toxic community as well, because people will start to care about their achievements more than the joy of the game. Immaturity and age might a problem-factor as well, altough I have met awesome and kind young people online.
In case of megaman its easy - as of today only the players play it who are truly passionate about it. They can support each other without the restrictions of the previosly listed aspects

There is a competition scene on Mega Man. The speedrunning scene. Even though it can get really competitive, specially during tournaments, everyone is always cool. The loser walks out sad, defeated, but never aggressively enraged. I think it's because of the same difference - they're of the original "gamer" type. Also I don't know about your gang, but every gamer kid was cool when I was little.
