The advancement of these sorts of titles have really been amazing. I can't really imagine the amount of work that goes into making such realistic looking environments. The last racing game I played was on the PS2 called Colin McRae Rally and while we loved it at the time, it would probably look pretty crap by today's standards and that is ok! Especially when you consider it was released over a decade ago :)
I totally agree with you @gooddream, to create these types of games requires a lot of work on the part of the developers. Certainly the videogames of more than a decade ago we see them a little obsolete graphically but at the time we played them we simply saw it surprising, however, the technology advances and that makes that today we see them with super realistic details.
