So this is October and you can see awesome artworks from countless artists with the Inktober hashtag. Inktober is a hand-drawing challenge for artists all over the world every year, and now there is #Blocktober

Blocktober is a new trend that video game level designers do, in which they showcase their games' level before they are covered with the proper environments appearance.

No details, vegetations, textures, eye candy, lighting and such. Only grids and different colours at some areas that indicate particular functions or what that thing is. It's called blockouts.

Blockouts/blocking out, is a development stage that are meant to show the scale of the area and plan how the player will move and navigate through the environments. That's where the name Blocktober came from.

Ugh, too small to see. Sorry.

#Blocktober was started by Naughty Dog's designer Michael Barclay with his tweet on 1 October, and then other game devs follow suit.

Well, the guy said that himself that #blocktober should be a thing and it seems like everyone agree. So Barclay create a Twitter account dedicated to archive all the #Blocktober tweets; Blocktober

If you stay tune on #Blocktober hastag on Twitter you can see more and more tweets from game devs showing their early stages works. Here are some larger images from #Blocktober tweets, this is how the games' levels looked like while in early stages development:

Team Fortress 2 by Freyja

Crysis 3 by Marcel Schaika

Titanfall by Jason McCord

Star Citizen by Sean Noonan

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture by Andrew Crawshaw

The Witness by Orsi Spanyol

Uncharted 4 by James Cooper

CS:GO by Chris Sims

Shattered Soul by Joshua Hughes

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West by Peter Field

Titanfall 2 by Chuck Wilson

More Team Fortress 2 by Mike Egan

Crowfall by Billy Garretsen

Do I have something I wanted to say about this new trend? I do. 1. It's somewhat inspiring to see all those early stages levels from the designers, 2. This is something about gaming so yeah this is good. Yes! #Blocktober should be a thing!

It's 5 October already and I wonder why I don't see early stages Rapture and Columbia from BioShock's level designer?!
