Skyrim is the game that many people, from the developer to modders keep doing their best to keep it alive from time to time. While Skyrim has been re released in 2 versions, Special Edition and Nintendo Switch, and later Skyrim VR, Skyrim is also modding playground for modders. Damn, this game is immortal. Many modders have made hundreds or thousands of mods for Skyrim, but some of them--I don't know if they just got carried away or something--made the mods to be nearly as massive as Skyrim itself, and feels like its own game instead of a 'just for fun' additions. Here's some of them...

Falskaar

Falskaar maybe the first massive mod of Skyrim that provide and entirely new land separated from Skyrim with plenty new quests. This mod was added to Skyrim in 2013 and been updated as recently as February 2017. Despite being a massive mod, bug fixes are still added continuously by the modder to ensure the smoothest gameplay experience possible.

The story is.. The island of Falskaar has been inhabitated by the Nords for hundreds of years, and upon your arrival in there you are known to the Nords as "The Traveler" who is a figure from some ancient prophecy. It has 26 quests with the main quest line is 9 quest long, and 17 side quests following.

New interesting items include new consumables, original books and recipes, weapons and armors and many unique texture packs. The NPCs are fully voiced by more than 100 individual voice actors and actresses with some of them are professionals speakers, resulted in over 10,000 lines of lore-rich dialogues. If that still not enough for you, this mod also have a brand new soundtrack containing 14 tracks worth of 40 minutes of music composed by Adamm Khuevrr, as well as a bard with several unique new songs.

The Wheels of Lull

This is another DLC sized mod and highly lore friendly for Skyrim. This mod add a large amount of adventures in the ancient Clockwork City of Sotha Sil beneath the land of Nirn. The story is about the Dragonborn will have to help the Chronographers of Lull-Mor to defeat the rising evil deep beneath the Throat of the World by turning the Wheels of Lull.

This mod will provides and expansive main quest, stretch out over 7 parts in a strange new world to explore from the deepest oceans to underground forests filled with strange new monsters to fight with your new weapons and armors everal side quests to run and puzzles to solve, and a new race, the living machine-mer of Sotha Sil. Five dungeons within the main quest has Legend of Zelda-like type of dungeons experiences with mini bosses in them and massive unique locations.

Enderal: The Shards of Order

This one is the largest of all come from German modding team SureAI, it has been in the making for 4 and a half years and resulting in a massive spectacular mod with almost all aspects of 'a game' should have. It is a total conversion of the actual game's core architecture, gameplay and assets. Enderal is set in an entire new land that nearly as huge as Skyrim, with its own different landscapes such as desert, mountains, and jungles and its own lore and stories.

Besides the landscapes and the cities, it also have everything that you can expect from a new game, including new weapons and armors, new monsters and NPCs with their own quest line that are professionally voiced by dozens of people both in German and English, some are even professional voice actors breathing life into the NPCs with the dark, twisted psychological stories.

It also features deeply overhauled gameplay mechanics, new special skills, classes and leveling systems providing many different playstyles. For example, healing is not as easy as usual in Skyrim. Your HP will only regenerate outside of combat when you eat something and during combat only when you drink potions. If this is not one of the most dedicated mod ever created, I don't know what is.

The Forgotten City

This one goes more to the story than the world size, though it is still quite large for a mod. The Forgotten City is the first mod in gaming to win a national Writers' Guild award for its script. The mod is about a big murder mystery investigation for the Dragonborn to deal with. It take place in a beautiful and detailed ancient underground city with plenty of secrets, mysteries and thousands years old relics.

The mod has over 1200 lines of dialogue profesionally voiced by 18 talented voice actors from different countries, and an original orchestral soundtrack by composer Trent Moriarty.

The city is not a dead ruins where nothing live there but the dead (Wait, wat?), there is a living community of people, each have their own unique stories. The unique gameplay features the ability to travel through time, and to complete the investigation you gonna need to fight new enemies, solve the puzzles, and interrogate the suspects. You will play through a dark, non-linear story where your experiences depends on every decisions you make that will lead you to several different endings.

The Forgotten City is deeply focused on its extraordinary storyline that it is said to be as good as mind twisting blockbuster movies such as Inception, Interstellar, and Edge of Tomorrow. Well this sounds like a real deal.

These mods are huge enough to provides new gameplay expriences, you might also feels like you just got yourself a new game, who knows if at least one of them end up being an independent retail game and if that's what really gonna happen, I'm starting to think modding a game is also a good start to be a video game developer.
