GOG.com Winter Sales - 7 game deals you shouldn't miss (imo)!

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

GOG.com started its Winter Sales a couple of days ago and the list of sales is absolutely huge. So to separate the wheat from the chaff, I’ve made this list of 7 game deals that you shouldn’t miss out on.

Please let me know in the comments what you think of my picks and which other sales you would recommend. Enjoy!

PS: I'm in no way endorsed by GOG.com. Just want to share my love of great video games.

Baldur’s Gate 2: Enhanced Edition (-75% - $ 4.99 - € 4.29)

Let’s start what an absolute showstopper and one of my all-time favorite games. When this game first released in 2000 it reinvented storytelling in games. The gameplay is build on a solid adaptation of the 3.5e DnD rules, which can be a bit overwhelming at first.

For less than 5 dollars you get the Enhanced Edition of the game, that runs super smooth on modern PCs. This edition includes the base game Shadows of Amn, the excellent expansion Throne of Bhaal and some never before released additions.

If you haven’t played this game yet, and you love RPGs, Baldur’s Gate 2 is absolutely worth your time.

Mafia (-30% - $ 8.29 - € 7.09)

Just as Baldur’s Gate 2, Mafia blew away everyone with it’s excellent story. Plus when it was released in 2002 it pushed graphical realism to a new high.

You play as Tommy Angelo in the 1930s and follow him how he climbs through the ranks of the Salieri mob family. I won’t spoil anything, but it’s a classic story about the rise and fall of a gangster, about friendship and ofcourse about deceit and betrayal.

The gameplay might feel a bit rough around the edges these days, but it’s definitely worth a playthrough.

The Witness (-60% - $ 17.49 - € 14.79)

If you like puzzle games, you’ll love The Witness. Not only has it some of the best brain teasers I’ve ever seen in a video game, but the environments in which you solve them are absolutely breathtaking.

You might be staring at a puzzle for five minutes, trying out different solutions when suddenly everything clicks together. The game is full of these eureka moments. Just when you think you have it all figured out, it throws you a curveball. And the hunt for that insightful moment starts all over again.

One quick warning though, if you’re only casually interested in puzzles this game probably isn’t for you. There’s some real hardcore stuff in there.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (-33% - $ 31.69 - € 26.89)

A new game that flew under the radar this year, but definitely deserves its time in the spotlight. If you ever enjoyed one of the old Commandos games, Shadow Tactics is right up your alley.

You take control over five unique assassins and lead them through tons of enemies and sneaky situations in feudal Japan. It’s all about planning your approach, executing and lots of quick loading when everything goes wrong.

Shadow Tactics is very enjoyable from gamers who like to take things slow and don’t shy away from a challenge. The beautifully drawn graphics make it very relaxing to play too.

Transistor (-75% - $ 5.59 - € 4.79)

This game is a masterclass in how to fuse style and substance in a video game. Just one look at its unique futuristic-steampunk aesthetic is enough to realize we’re dealing with quite a unique game here.

The story might be very opaque at the start, but it’s intriguing from start to finish. Combat is a mix between a twin stick shooter and a pause screen where you can carefully plan your next move. The many skills in the game can be mixed and mashed together in specific ways to suit your playstyle.

Not convinced yet? Then let me ask you this: in what other game can you explore a love story between a mute lady and a talking sword? Exacty.

Firewatch (-60% - $ 9.49 - € 8.09)

And talking about absurd love stories, Firewatch has its own unique take on romance. In this walking simulator you play as Henry who needs a break from life and takes up a job as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. The only human contact you have is with your supervisor Delilah, through a small handheld radio.

Needless to say, weird stuff starts happening soon and it’s your job to figure it all out. Is there really a conspiracy, are you seeing ghost or is the loneliness of the woods getting to you?

Firewatch is a short game, but the way it tells its story is a masterclass in video game writing and design.

Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt - Game of the Year Edition (-70% - $ 23.59 - € 19.95)

What better game to end this list, right? For less than 25 bucks you get quite arguably the best game of this generation, including both absolutely brilliant expansion packs.

The worldbuilding, the graphics, the characters, simply everything in The Witcher 3 is top level quality. If you haven’t played the game yet, this sale is the perfect excuse to dive in.

Just be prepared to get hooked as you might easily lose a hundred hours of playtime without even realising it.

I've been hesitate to get Firewatch for weeks because I'm not sure if I'll like it or not. But once I read your talk about romance in it..

Wait when did I open up Firewatch page on GOG? Huh..

Just beware, it isn't your classic love story. Oh no sir, not at all. :-) Also, the game is only about 4 hours long, so keep that in mind.

If you already bought it: enjoy the ride!

For me it's okay if it's short but great story, but yeah I will keep that in mind, I hope I'll enjoy this. Thank you for letting me know, and great post by the way.

Just wanted to thank you for not making a list that is just Forgotten Realms games or similar "popular" titles that everyone uses just to escape possibly offending someone.

Some interesting choices here, I will have to check them out.

Glad you liked it!

Have you played some of them, or which one peaks your interest the most?

I am interested in Transistor and The Witness. Had not heard much about either because most of the gaming sites are too busy covering the latest "HD remake" of X game instead of giving plethora's of coverage to new games gamers may be interested in. It is sad.

Out of those two I would suggest trying out Transistor first.

The Witness is very niche and might push you away at first. Unless you're REALLY into puzzles ofcourse.

I feel you. Sometimes I feel like I want to only play Super Mario Bros then other days I am in an Escape From Monkey Island mood. lol

There are a lot of interesting campaigns made by gog.com recently.

By the way, we are a community that brings Indie Game Developers with their fellow gamers. So feel free to join our page if you are interested.

Besides that I'm also starting to share each of our facebook game review here and I already started with one of my favorite Indie Multiplayer games called: Viking Village. Feel free to read my blog post here.

Sorry duder, must have missed this comment (which is strange, considering the big picture.)

Anyway, joined the Facebook group. I might be interested in reviewing some of those indie games in the future.

Absolutely loved Firewatch. The ending was a bit abrupt, though.

Yeah, the ending is arguably the 'worst' part of the game. Although I didn't hate it, I thought it was actually kind of fitting. But it does come rather sudden indeed.
