Weapon Skins are now available on the PUBG Test Server

This morning details were revealed about the new weapon skins system coming to Player Unknown's Battlegrounds. The new build went live today, along with some other changes and bug fixes.

Ah weapon skins, what would we do without them. If you have ever played Counter-Strike you will know that skins almost define your status. Sure having skill is nice but if you don't have a knife or a good looking AK-47, what are you doing? PUBG already has a version of in game skins with it's clothing options that follow CSGO in defining status. Having a full yellow tracksuit must mean you are good right? But that wasn't enough, players have been showing interest in weapon skins and there have been previous leaks of just that and even Armour skins. Now they are here on the test server ready for players to try them out. However, some people may not like the idea of the game, in a way, becoming CSGO. With the skins dropping from crates we could be getting into the loot box issue again.

So how do you get them?

These new weapon skins are only available through opening crates. Crates are obtained either through unlocking them with in game currency (BP) or buying them off the Steam Market. Triumph and Raider are the new crate types that will contain these skins. Triumph is acquired randomly through the weekly crates but requires a key to open. Raider crates are guaranteed on the separate crate option but only 5 are available before they are sold out. To equip a weapon skin, there is a new weapons tab under the customisation menu. On the Test Server you are granted with free BP, Crates and Keys to open crates to your hearts content.

What skins can you get?

So far there are a range of skins and levels of rarity for all of the usable guns. The Rugged (Orange) is a bright orange skin that covers majority of the weapon. These are only in the Triumph crate that can also drop a bonus item. Rugged (Beige) skins are available in the Raider crate but are a lot less exciting than the orange. Jungle and Desert Digital skins are exclusive to Raider and Triumph crates respectively. While Trifecta skins are only dropped from the latter. Gold and Silver Plate skins are available in both crates but only on certain weapons. Turquoise delight is a bright blue and orange skin, only available in the Raider Crate for the Kar-98, M164, Tommy Gun and P1911. The rarest of the Triumph skins is Glory that displays a black and white chicken design, on the AKM and UMP.

What else is coming?

Screenshots of the new 4x4 map were also revealed last week on Twitter and Facebook. This much smaller map was teased by Player Unknown earlier this month along with some concept art. Now we can see what the map actually looks like with the different terrain and building styles. Being smaller, this map will concentrate players, encouraging more encounters and firefights. This will result in quicker game times but more exciting and competitive gameplay.

A blog post for the new update also introduces the idea of region lock. The development team are considering 'operating servers so that only those players who reside in that region can connect and play'. This is not just to combat cheaters either, the approach aims to 'provide a better gameplay experience as it will improve network issues and help with linguistic barriers'.
