Heretic - Childhood Game That We Used To Love (Original Content)

in #gaming7 years ago

Hey guys, welcome back to another gaming review and this time it's an old game called Heretic. It was released right after Doom (the original one). Apparently it's based on Doom as even the weapons are similar. Nonetheless, it was super fun to play.

The graphics of Heretic may look terrible now but to us, the graphics were similar to a 4K LED TV now. We didn't notice how bad it was since we couldn't visualize how the graphics would be in the future.

That said, what is Heretic?

Story

It's basically a FPS shooter game that was released 23 years ago (1994)! It's been that long huh. 3 Serpent Riders used their magic to possess kings and make them their puppets. The Sidhe elves rose against the Serpent Riders but were later declared as heretics.

You basically play as Corvus, one of the Sidhe elves and you journey to kill the weakest of the 3 Serpent Riders. The story wasn't obvious back then as games in the past didn't have an interactive story line. You don't have elaborate cut-scenes like you do these days.

What fascinated us was basically the part where you kill the undead and all sorts of weird creatures.

Weapons

Heretic has quite a number of weapons that you can use but you always start with the basic. The most basic weapon that you can use is the staff. It's just a wooden stick with a metal end.

The next in line would be the gauntlets of the necromancer. They emit an electrical attack and kills close range enemies. Both of these weapons are considered as close-range weapons.

The first long-range weapon that you will use is the elven wand. It shoots yellow crystals and it's quite useful in the beginning. Definitely a nice weapon to see after using a wooden staff. It can be likened to a pistol firing single-round shots.

If you have a pistol, there should be a shotgun as well. Here comes the ethereal crossbow. It basically works like a shotgun where you hit multiple enemies at once and they deal quite a lot of damage. Useful in a crowded area.

The next is the dragon claw. It's the machine gun equivalent in Heretic. Since this game was based on Doom after all, the weapons in Heretic are similar in functions. It's awesome against many enemies as well and it's long-range.

The next in line is the phoenix rod. What it does is that it fires an explosive charge. Enemies who come into contact with the charge explodes. Think of it as a slow rocket launcher where you rocket moves slowly but deals a whopping damage when it hits.

The last weapon you can get is the firemace. It's basically an IMBA weapon where it fires "grenade-type" objects and the best part is, it bounces around the room! It will be super hard for those demons to avoid getting hit! It's like a "screw it all" weapon so you have to try this!

Undead creatures

There were many different monsters in Heretic but we only remember a few more prominent ones.

  • Golem. Golem looks like The Thing in Fantastic Four. It's a muscular creature that is brown in color and attacks you using their fists. They can also use a screaming skull attack that shoots right at you. They aren't that hard to kill.

  • Gargoyle. There are two types of gargoyles, i.e. gargoyles and fire gargoyles. The regular gargoyles attack you via their close-range slash. They're basically floating in the sky and they're red in color. You would remember them if you played Heretic before.

  • Maulotaur. A Maulotaur is basically a minotaur that carries mauls (huge hammers). They have both melee and ranged attacks but we don't really remember their range attacks. They're immune to some 1-hit ko weapons.

  • Disciple of D'Sparil. They are basically wizards that are enemies of Heretic. They are faceless and wear black robes. They use missile attacks and are hard to dodge.

  • Iron lich. We basically remember them as floating heads. They were one of the creepier monsters back then thanks to their weird "smile". Just imagine big heads moving around. They basically deal elemental attacks like fire, ice and wind.

  • Undead warriors. These are basically skeletons wearing armor and red capes. Their main attack is using their axe to slash you and for long-range attacks, they throw their axes.

There are more creatures in the game but we only remember some over the others. Even after so many years we can't forget the golem and the iron lich.

Is it worth playing?

In the past it was definitely worth playing. We couldn't find a better game back then but of course as new games come about, we left Heretic for good. We hopped from one game to another rather often.

If you want to play it now, it may not be as interesting, unless you've played it before and have some feelings of nostalgia. If you're a new gamer, then probably not worth it.

is very similar to WOLFENSTEIN 3D, the first of its kind, and you're right this was the best graphics in its time.
