The Non-Aggression "Treaties" In Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon Games

Online multiplayer has really changed the way many gamers connect and play. It has enabled players to challenge other players across the globe form the comforts of their own home. Two such games that benefit extensively from online play are Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon. However, these games too come with their own challenges within their respective online communities. One particular challenge common across these two games are what I like to call "Implied Non-Aggression Treaties." 

What are "Implied Non-Aggression Treaties"?

Each community has its own jargon for this activity. The Super Smash Bros community refers to them as "Taunt Parties" while the Splatoon community refers to them as "Squid Parties." But collectively, I am referring to them as "Non-Aggression Treaties" as that is what they essentially are. Such agreements signal to other players to halt all combat and fighting, and play around instead. 

Why are They a Problem, Exactly?

In a private setting, where the match is only between a group of friends, there is no problem with taking part in such activities. The problem arises when such activities are done in public multiplayer matches. In most cases, the players taking part in public matches seek competition as it was meant in the game. In Super Smash Bros., it is to fight with other player. While in Splatoon, it is to spread more ink and meet an objective. Such Non-Aggression Treaties lead most players to disregard the intended objective and gang up on other players that so not comply with the agreement. It is this particular detail that becomes harmful to a player's online experience. 

In games like Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon, where this activity has become very common, it has deterred many players from participating in the game modes where this activity is present. In such events, this leads to the mode not being played by many players, giving this game and its community a negative image. In an attempt to make amends to this issue, Nintendo has begun enforcing rules that punish players for taking part in such activities. But, so far, the implementation of these rules have had the side effect of also penalizing players who had no intent on taking part in such activities. This has led to many frustrations among players who are just having unintentional temporary technical issues. 

What Can We Do?

While I do not argue for the ban of such activities, as I believe players should be able to play the game however way they like, it has become clear that these activities are hurting the experience of other players. An alternative solution would be to consider the place and time in which these activities take place. Such activities should be done in a private setting where it will not affect the experience of players who do not intend to partake in such activities. 

Conclusion

Non-Aggression Treaties in games such as Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon have had a negative impact on the games' online communities. Nintendo has taken steps to minimize the impact of such activities in order to protect and maintain the online experiences of these games. Now it is our turn to do its part in maintaining as fun and vibrant online gaming community.
