Why do retro consoles turn yellow?

in #gaming5 years ago

Every collector or nostalgic gamer has had the curiosity to look for some retro console to relive old moments, an NES, Famicom or SNES are some clear examples, however, can be found with a detail that visually can be a little annoying, it is a change of color that suffer these old consoles.

Many people even think that having this strange color is some kind of imitation, but it is something completely normal that happens. We can also see this on old monitors or even in the first Macintosh that eventually were placed in a burned yellow.

It is not impossible to find a retro console in its original color, but there is something that we must take into account and are their costs, to be in perfect condition its price increases, but, that yellow color makes you can find much cheaper (depending on the console), so it has its benefit to acquire it with that strange color.

Why Do White Retro Consoles Turn Yellow

Formerly the formula with which they made the plastic was derived from petroleum, so its composition makes them flammable. This plastic when being in consoles or computers that exerted a significant heat the manufacturers had to protect that they did not ignite in flames, therefore they made a chemical mixture with the plastic so that this did not happen.

Although they found the solution, over time they realized that these plastics when in heat were placed with a yellow hue, some more than others because UV or sunlight was another cause that could accelerate more the process of change in color, this is why some consoles are more yellow than others.

In the cartridges also passed this problem, being in direct contact with the console this transmitted heat, in addition to the long hours within them caused the same effect, that's why some games were observed that tone change that disturbs many visually.

Can you remove the yellow color from retro consoles?

Although it seems impossible to remove that yellow color if you can, there are several techniques and products to perform this task, but the most common of all is to use hydrogen peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, this chemical reaction to UV rays is able to rescue the original color of our console of yesteryear, making it look young and radiant as in its old days.

But if you're one of those who doesn't have time to devote to your console, there are people who offer excellent internet service who do this job, no matter what decision you make, you'll be able to restore your beloved console or its accessories.

Already from a certain point this material was not used more in the consoles, in addition the white color of progressive way has been substituted by dark colors, something very similar to the computers, before all were white, to see a cabinet of another color was something very strange in the 80 and 90.

Did you know it caused that strange color on retro consoles? Tell me your opinion in the comment box

interesting topic. It's something I always wondered lol. Perhaps they abandoned white consoles for this reason? I can't remember the last time i had a console or even an accessory that was white.

Thank you very much for commenting @gooddream, indeed one of the reasons why we stopped producing white consoles was this one, however already the plastic with which you make them has no chemical that causes this effect.

They keep on launching to the market consoles of this color but they are specific editions, the last ones I remember with this color were the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360, as time goes by they still keep their original color.

This was informative, I always wondered why it happens. I don't know if it was to happen to my old PS1, it died before that.

tear drop

Thanks @ahmadmanga, the PS1 Fat suffered from this problem, the PsOne at the moment I do not remember having seen one with this problem. Too bad your little console died T.T
