Super Mario 64 - Nintendo 64 Collection #18 - Retro Review
The Nintendo 64 despite having a short catalog of games brought us many years ago tremendous pieces that over time became unforgettable, Star FoX 64, Banjo Kazooie, 007 Goldeneye among many more made this console had a special place in those players who could experiment with it, this time we will see a very particular character that has always been present in almost all generations of Nintendo, but here was the first time we saw it in 3D being a totally unique moment that was marked in our mind, the great Mario 64.
Mario 64 is a platform game in three dimensions which was one of the first releases for the 64 Bit console of Nintendo, showed the gamer audience that our plumber would not only stay in the 2D era, evolving his concept in the gameplay and the way we will pass in each of their worlds, the plot is the classic of almost all his predecessor games, rescue the precious "Peach", which is kidnapped by the sinister and evil "Bowser" who also wants to conquer the great castle to be the absolute king of the Mushroom Kingdom, in this way we are very clear without much introduction our great goal in the game.
For the time the first time I could experience this game was simply fabulous, I had already heard comments from my classmates of those years but I absolutely did not want to hear them clearly, since it was one of the games I most wanted to play, simply I spent hours without taking off the console and the TV to see if it was a great ending, however I clearly remember that I went through it again because I wanted to finish it 100%, a task that at first is a little complicated, but once the satisfaction is achieved it is just perfect.
When it is the first time you watch Mario 64, you are really surprised by how alive their colors were and how well designed their characters were (including the enemies), considering that it was one of the first titles that appeared for the Nintendo 64 really makes good use of its hardware, but as many of us know, I do not get 100% potential out of it, but like all new products, I think its developers really did a good job.
It is the first time we can see the castle in its entirety completely in 3D, the architecture of the 3D model that was given to this is really good, none of the rooms are repeated, each one has a characteristic atmosphere, an issue that I consider very original inside of the game, here we can find doors that welcome us to new rooms where we find the different paintings that are portals that take us to new worlds.
Each world has a particular design making them totally different from each other, we can find aquatic worlds, snow worlds, among many others, but the interesting thing that as we advance their designs become more complex, this gives us to understand that the game It has a very good curve and difficulty, at first they will seem simple, but then we will realize that they can be a good challenge for any player.
In 60% of the levels we will find bosses which have a good graphical section, apart they represent a good difficulty scale, I still remember that first big boss with that big size, it seemed totally threatening, but evaluating their movements a little we realize It is very easy to eliminate it, and when you are an experienced player you can even disappear in a matter of seconds.
The playability of our character is excellent, the command of the Nintendo 64 responds in a great way to the movements we perform on the plumber, we can walk slowly, run, make different types of jump, make a bounce on the walls to reach great heights, Punch and kick, make a fall hit with our buttocks, bend over, make a backward swing and many more moves that just made this video game fun to play at all times.
The mechanics of the game can be a bit monotonous, in each world we must collect stars, this allows us to enter new areas inside the castle, until we reach one of the stages where we face Bowser, when he defeats he gives us a key which allows access to a totally unknown room, and here we will repeat this process, despite this the way in which we collect the stars vary depending on the world we are in, getting them all is one of the most coveted challenges among the players of this great videogame since some of them puts us in test our abilities and others are in very hidden places, that with luck or a good eye, we can notice the places where they are.
Also worth noting that inside the castle are secret places where we get either a star or a new power for our character, our friend "Toad" who is in various places of the castle will give us clues of these and even how to eliminate certain enemies, this falls very well since without a spoiler gives us a small initiative of how to advance in the game.
Like all Nintendo classic music is simply original and addictive, it is very difficult after hearing for the first time several of his melodies forget our mind, we will always end whistling or babbling with our mouth, sometimes repeats their melodies in the levels, but in spite of this they do not become "annoying", being so addictive we simply do not mind listening to them again, their sounds are very well worked, each element within the game has its characteristic sound, this makes it simply dynamic and fun at all moment.
Despite the fact that more than 21 years have passed Mario 64 is still an excellent videogame to bring it to the present, its gameplay, levels, secret access and the challenge it represents at the level of gameplay make it an excellent title, you can get a improved version of it for Nintendo DS where you can choose other characters apart from Mario, if you are one of those people who could never play it give a small opportunity, I guarantee that you will want to pass to the last of its levels.
