Epic moment in EVO tournament - Videogame History #124

Within the great competitions and tournaments that exist in the world of video games, professional players perform really impressive actions or plays, leaving many spectators open-mouthed.

There are a variety of tournaments depending on the type of game, many countries that support this type of electronic sport broadcast it on TV, but most of them are broadcast on YouTube or Twitch, the latter two being the most common means of viewing them.

One of the great competitions where the best players from all over the world come together is the Evolution Championship Series (EVO) which is exclusive for games of the Fighting genre that began in 1996 with the Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Street Fighter 2 Turbo videogames.

Since then, every year different fighters from all over the world come together to see who is the best among them and win the acclaimed first place prize, I have personally seen many of these events, but the one that surprised me in an impressive way was the one in 2004 where there were more than 9 video games, including Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.

Before continuing I must clarify a technical aspect of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, in this video game there is a movement which is a bit complicated to do, it takes a lot of practice to be able to execute it in the proper way, it's called "Parry".

Source

It's a defensive move where the player must press forward at the right moment before any special power or punch hits your character, this gives you a big advantage in your life bar because doing it correctly will not take away any percentage.

It can be applied to any type of attack, at first it may seem a little easy but when it comes to multiple attacks or specials (unique moves with a variety of strokes) it is where you really see the difficulty of accurately calculating the moment to press forward, if you fail you simply get a good punishment.

Returning to EVO 2004 in the Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike tournament the players Daigo Umehara (Ken) and Justin Wong (Chun Li) were in the fight for second place, both are experienced players in this type of games so the battle would be really intense, however, a fact would occur that would remain forever marked in the history of video games.

Source

It was the last round in this battle, both players had one round won, so either of them with only one victory would be in second place, Justin Wong (Chun Li) had a very confident technique to have his victory, leaving Daigo Umehara (Ken) with only 1% of his life.

A single blow and Daigo Umehara (Ken) would lose the battle, the public pressure (which was quite a lot) and the environment was really horrible, any gamer would throw in the towel claiming there was nothing to do, however, Daigo would show that you should never give up even in the worst situation in any videogame.

Just when Justin Wong (Chun Li) decided to end the battle by applying the special movement of his character Daigo Umehara (Ken), he completely stopped the attack by applying the Parry technique, absorbing all the damage and allowing him to execute a fulminating combo ending the life bar of his opponent, it was simply an epic moment.

The crowd could not believe it, the screams were overwhelming throughout the room, Justin Wong (Chun Li) was simply cold in his chair from such an impressive counterattack, this move to this day remains a reference in many fighting video games around the world.

This teaches any gamer not to lose his temper, personally I always have it in mind, it helps me in any video game I'm playing and more if it's a competitive environment, despite how terrible the situation can be with a good strategy you can get to achieve your goals in whatever you want and more in the gaming world.

Dude. DUDE. DUUUUUUUUDE.

This moment of EVO has always been a classic for me. And it's even one of the motives of why I try to play some fighting games competitively!

I currently play a lot of SSB Melee, Tekken and I've also been getting a little bit of Street Fighter 3S here and there because I've been loving what the game brings to the table and how complex and fast it gets to be. This post really spoke to me.

Do you play third strike or any other Fighting game Competitively? I've started Third Strike because there's this thing called FightCade which lets you play arcade games with online features!

I've always played Street Fighter since I was a kid, over the years I've expanded to other games but I haven't spent time with them because of a video game called League of Legends XD. Maybe at some point I'll come back to them again.

I'm just recently getting into it, lol
