Donkey Kong - Videogame History #2 - Retro Review
Nintendo was not always the great company we know today, before owning its 8 Bit console were developers for Arcade or console games, its market started in the Asian continent from Japan, in that country they had a success with the machine Arcade Radar Scope which was another shooter. They wanted to expand the territory outside their native country to America, where they thought that their successful game would have the same luck, but not everything went as expected.
In America Radar Scope was not well received by the community, being without any kind of winnings, causing Nintendo to have great losses in those years, games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders were the kings in the rooms, totally opaque the video game of the Asian company, this resulted in the return of a huge amount of machines filling the deposits of many cabinets, the company at that time did not know what to do.
Hiroshi Yamauchi (president of Nintendo at that time) took the decision to redesign these machines, wanting to do as a Radar Scope 2.0, however they did not have many designers who could do this task, at that time was a newbie among them which I entrusted the difficult task of rescuing that game for Arcade classrooms, the name of that newbie was "Shigeru Miyamoto".
Miyamoto without Yamauchi knew it was ready to create a game from scratch, but taking into account the limitations of the Radar Scope Arcade since its main mission was to reprogram all those machines which were totally abandoned, adding a new game totally innovative, This is how he started with his first sketches, thus creating one of the most memorable games in the history of video games, "Donkey Kong".
It was a difficult task to reprogram the abandoned machine but its efforts were worth it, putting them in full operation with a totally new game, however, Yamauchi to see that the game was not what he wanted did not want to take it in mass, so they decided to try a single machine at the "Spot" bar, they let them spend 1 day to see when money raised and to their surprise they were more than 30 dollars, their eyes became symbols of dollars at that moment, they immediately gave him the news to Yamauchi, who decided to completely remodel all the Radar Scope machines turning them into Donkey Kong.
The success that it had in the Arcade halls was impressive, it was from this precise moment that the great Nintendo floor of strong way in America, making the mass production of this cabinet, obtaining impressive gains of 120 million dollars, it is not for less, since it was a video game that was too addictive and unique at that time.
But Donkey Kong not only stayed in the Arcade rooms, the company Atari wanted to obtain the exclusivity of this video game, they knew the potential that it had to boost their sales, but the company Coleco went ahead, signing a contract with Nintendo to obtain an exclusivity temporary in this video game, adapting the successful Donkey Kong to the Colecovision, port of very good quality that undoubtedly helped to greatly boost the sales of this console.
As a curious fact this was the first video game where our beloved plumber "Mario" appeared, only that at that time was made known by its creator as "Jump Man", with the passing of the years with the departure of the game "Mario Bros "It was where this same character was used but already giving him a profession and adding a brother who has accompanied him throughout the history of video games, the great" Luigi ".
Donkey Kong revolutionized and innovated many aspects of video games at that time, giving a simple argument, different levels and adapting the genre of the platforms in the Arcades, its simple gameplay that consisted of jumping barrels, climbing stairs and jumping platforms to rescue their beautiful lady made it become an ultra addictive game anywhere, came to compete against monsters as was Pac-Man or Space Invaders giving evidence that not everything is created in the world of video games.
