Retro Review - Day of the Tentacle
Many things to thank LucasArts, such as his classic and extraordinary films of a few years ago, which in turn accompanied by the best soundtracks, characters that today are still icons representative of a generation and also a large number of games that to this day remain among the top spots of many people's favorite games.
The first time I played Day of The tentacle, I had no idea that it was a sequel to another graphic adventure called Maniac Mansion, although for my luck these two games have nothing to do with each other, only share some common characters, so you can play day of the tentacle without having played your prequel (in case you are going to play it).
Our mission in this game is to save the world, yes, again save the world as we have done in infinities of games, but the detail is that the way in which this game takes this task is what makes Day of The Tentacle stand out about other games, since humor is the key element in this adventure.
In Day of the Tentacle we must save the world from an evil purple tentacle, said tentacle is a mascot of Dr. Fred, that due to bad luck of destiny, the purple tentacle drank of contaminated water, which caused it to mutate and in addition to become evil.
Due to this situation Dr. Fred can not think of a better idea than to call the protagonist of the game, Bernard, the typical school nerd who wears glasses, but in this adventure he will not be alone since he will have the help of Hoagie, a young man that he likes heavy metal and clearly expresses it by the way he dresses and with Laverne, a blonde medical student, who has a slightly strange eye.
These three friends will embark on the strangest and craziest adventures to be able to stop the purple tentacle of world domination, for this the Dr.fred will send them to the past with a time machine to avoid what the tentacle will do, unfortunately for the three friends, the time machine does not work as it should, so it sends Hoagie to many years in the past, Laverne sent it to 200 years in the future and meanwhile Bernard stayed in the present, and now You must fix the machine to bring your friends back.
Day Of the Tentacle is a pretty colorful game, in each scenario you can see colors quite bright colors, it's as if we were playing directly to an animated series, the designs of the characters are drawn according to the madness of this game ie totally disproportionate designs, but maintaining that level of humor so characteristic of this game.
The scenarios as is characteristic of lucasarts, are full of details and good drawing, these scenarios were designed to harmonize with the style of play that is Day of the Tentacle, this game was praised because they perfectly captured the drawing style of the cartoons or the animated series of their time, and it's not surprising, we all know what LucasArts tried to bring the best of himself to his audience and there are a lot of games to prove it.
Many years later, it came out a remastered version of Day Of The Tentecle that slightly improved the graphic aspect in many things, but even so the old version is still valid today, day of the tentacle is a timeless game.
In this game could not miss a soundtrack that accompanies us in all the extraordinary and crazy adventures, Day of the Tentacle has an excellent soundtrack, which in my opinion has no fault, each melody was composed according to the type of game that is and these, in turn, adapt perfectly to each scenario and situation that we go through, and also have a good quality in the voices and sound effects.
We are facing another graphic adventure of LucasArts therefore the Click and Point and the SCUMM was something characteristic of this company, anyone who is familiar with this system knows how to handle this game, it does not have much mystery and those who do not know how it works, the scumm system is very intuitive has a series of verbs of which you can use in certain objects, characters or situations , in such a way that it helps us fulfill some mission, get some clue or simply move around the stage.
Because we have the possibility of having control of three characters that are in different stages in time, we can alternate between characters according to the situation in which it is needed,therefore we must bear in mind that the actions we do at certain times will have an impact in the future, that is, remember that the 3 main characters are in different time lines, Hoagie is in the past, Bernard in the present and Laverne in the future, therefore the actions that we do with Hoagie, will have repercussion in the time of Bernard and meanwhile what we do with bernard will have repercussion in the time of Laverne, all this problem with the 3 time lines will bring us a series of situations that we must solve in each epoch in which we find ourselves, therefore depending on which character we are controlling, we have to perform certain tasks that help another character that is in another time line.
Day of the Tentacle is an excellent game to pass the time and laugh due to its great amount of humor, those who have played some Monkey Island or Sam and max Hit the Road, you know what I mean, in addition to being a game not very difficult and not too long to complete, it is perfect for those people who want to enter the world of graphic adventures for the first time.
Loved this game. Took a long time to figure out how to make a corpse win a beauty contest in the future, but it was worth it.
Yes, that part made me a little tedious. But I had fun.
