ROCKET LEAGUE IS A GEM OF A GAME....
Rocket League is one of the most unlikely and yet popular games to come out of gaming in the last 3 years. When explained to a common gamer it sounds abstract and ridicules while lacking an objective besides a win, but it’s so much more. Tell me how you would explain a game of cars with a soccer ball…it’s complicated and hard so please bear with me since I’m going to have to do that in the next few sentences. At least this game is popular to the point where most of you have heard about this game, so you have a general idea of what I’m talking about already and if you haven’t heard of this once again bear with me as I’ll try to explain. Rocket League simplified is a game where you are a car on a team or by yourself trying to score on the opposing team made up of cars just like yours and you must outscore your opponent by using a soccer ball, boost, and a dome-like field. Now I’m not doing the game justice by that half-hearted explanation, but it truly is a hard game to explain without showing you. I love Rocket League I play it in my free time at ranked 2 v 2 most of the time so I’m not trying to make it sound like I’ve never played this before. Well today we’re going to be discussing this game from a gameplay perspective, a market perspective, and looking at what the future holds for this car sports game.
Rocket League is very much a “we will show you the basics little bird but you must be the one to fly type of game” what that means is that It’s a game where it’s ultimately up to you to learn new skills in order to best your opponents in ranked/unranked online matches in order to get those sweet division up or that sweet nectar of bragging rights. Most people will obviously start in the unranked games for fun but eventually they all wonder what players hide behind the curtains of ranked and how would they compare to them. Since it is based on your division you’ll probably start with people the same skill as you (unless the division just reset) but you’ll reach a wall eventually, a skill curve that you won’t be able to best with your basic skills. So, you start training trying to master hitting the ball, flying, being able to do things forwards and backwards…you’ll try and reach a new level so that you can reach that skill curve. That’s why so many people just stay in that rank or give up or keep playing to try and best their rank. Now this is another important aspect of the playing system it’s split into ranked and unranked so far so easy then in the unranked and ranked they’ll share 4 main modes to play solo, doubles, standard (3v3), or solo standard (which is not 1v3 but is like you can’t play with friends like in standards so every time you play solo standard you’ll be paired with randoms and is 3v3).
Unranked also has other modes like chaos (4v4) and they add new events to unranked, but they never mess with the 4 ranked games modes. The problem is seeing which you’re best at do you enjoy playing alone, or do you want that extra partner that’ll help you if you mess up, or do you want to form a team with two friends and run standards, or do you like the idea of playing alone but want some randoms there with you just in case you have a bad game? It’s all what you want to do now personally I love playing ranked doubles It’s not too chaotic as sometimes standard is and if you partner isn’t having the best game which happens periodically you’re able to “carry” your team to a win, and also if you’re not having the best game your partner can pick up the slack and lead to a win. Now there’s plenty of other things in the game which you’ll start to learn by playing besides flying, things like defensive rotations which is important in team (2v2, 3v3, etc.) play, but this section is already getting out of hand to the point I’m going to insert like two pictures in this section just to keep people entertained but if you want to know more about how to “get gud” try and look at some YouTube video highlights or watch the eSport Rocket League matches which I’ll talk more about later anyways on to the next.
It’s more than fair to say that Rocket League is a success and you wouldn’t be wrong since Rocket League is more than proud of its 5 million copies that have been sold in their 11 months. Well if those numbers don’t instantly make you say wow it’s reported that Rocket League has a yearly revenue of around $110 million including DLC content with 40% of that income coming from PS4/XB1 users. So not bad numbers and I gave you these numbers to show you that the people who created Rocket League, Psyonix, are very dedicated to seeing this game stay relevant and successful and it shows since they pump out tons of DLC and new game content every few months. This is there golden egg that they want to see expand and never fade out of the mainstream gaming market. Now I got Rocket League free on PS4 when it first came out because of the free game of the month deal, but it’s around I think $30.00 now. Anyways my point is in all these numbers Rocket League was by no means a failure and has raised Psyonix from a bad place to being able to afford to work on multiple projects in higher qualities.
Rocket League’s future is a big, pink frosted doughnut and Psyonix is Homer Simpson. Rocket League is doing numbers and at an increasing rate every year. This game is competitive and popular enough to have its own e-sports league that regularly holds tournaments that have substantial amounts of cash prizes. I expect this game to have nowhere to go but up (just like my competitive rank) and I look forward to the innovative ideas that Psyonix works on to and puts into the game monthly to keep this game new and relevant. I recommend that you hop into this game before it gets even more popular.
Well of course I like this game it’s amazing and well of course I’m biased. It’s fun, you can keep learning new skills and tricks that’ll get you the edge over your opponent. This game is so creative and puts out additional content every month with new game modes every once and a while. Anyways this is my review and I hope you enjoy this review as much as I enjoy Rocket League and if you like this type of content hit that follow button want to see a certain game/anime just write about it in the comments the next review is Attack on Titan so that’ll be fun.
