I had a quick run with the game myself too but just as you noted I found it quite repetitive at times.
I've actually been doing some "historical" gaming posts lately, covering noteworthy games released in certain years (just made two about 98 and 2000) and looking back at it, games featuring a repetitive gameplay quite often still gain a large fanbase
