Last week I started my countdown of Top 10 Mario Games of all time because there are 10 weeks until the release of Super Mario Odyssey. We are 9 weeks out until Odyssey and it’s time to unveil the No. 9 Mario game of all time. . .

Super Mario Land is the 1989 launch title for the game boy. If you enjoyed Super Mario Bros (pack in title for the NES), you will enjoy Super Mario Land.  The best way to play this title today would be on the GameCube – Gameboy add on or plugging your cartridge into a Retron 5. I’m not a fan of hand held gaming so I would play this title on emulation for a console like experience.    There are some difference between this title and Super Mario Bros. Obviously it’s in black and white.  When you use fire power, the fireball bounces off walls. Also there are “shoot em up” levels mixed in.    Here is level 2-3, where Mario operates a submarine.  

Level 4-2 is one my favorite Mario levels and really gives you a great feel for what this game is about. And how can you not love this Japanese style music?
