Civilization VI - Thoughts

The previous civilization game was set after earth's resources had run out and people had to rebuild a civilization on a new alien planet full of alien creatures and strange gasses, however this game brings the series back to its roots.

For those who haven't played this game before you start off with a convoy that can be moved around to your chosen location, when you have found the location you want you can start to build your first city. As you go through the game you will have to build up your city/'s and the surrounding area along with making alliances with the other inhabitants of the world.

Creating a world

Before you actually get into the game you will have to decide what type of world you want along with the difficulty and a few further options, the choice I think is most important is the leader of your civilization.

You have a choice between 21 different leaders who each bring a different advantage to your civilization, the advantages aren't huge things but they are the base idea you build around, for example; If you decide to choose a leader who gives military advantages you are going to want to build up a strong military, and if you chose a leader who gives faith advantages you will want to build more structures around faith.

Government

One of the biggest new features to civilization is the government feature which takes the place of the culture tree, although the game still uses culture just slightly differently.

The government is all about choosing policies which you can get through researching different sciences, the feature really adds another thing to think about when choosing what science to look at next as you really don't want to ignore policies.

The policies are made up of four different main sections; Military policies, Economic policies, Diplomatic policies and Wild card policies, each of these sections covers the area you would expect and the wildcard section allows you to put any type of policy in said section.

So what they actually do is give you in-game bonuses each one towards production of certain unit types or things like bonus gold from trade etc. The one thing that isn't as clear is a type of card you can put only in the wildcard section, there are three specific cards that if used you will gain XP towards great people in the areas of science, religion and writing.

Overall

Overall I would say this Civilization is one of my favourite of the series as it brings back the original idea of being in the earlier days of human civilization which I think is more of a fun style to play because rather than starting with futuristic military units you have old style siege units and archers which I prefer to use.

One thing you also need to know about this game is you will need to leave space around your main city as expanding cities expand to the surrounding tiles rather than just the same on the same tile, also there are now more types of building that need to have their own tile so building and farm placements are quite important.

I also really like the new map style the game has, rather than just having black squares showing undiscovered areas they will appear as a blank map and then once you explore an area and move on it will then appear as an area drawn onto the map, I personally think it looks really nice and looks better than just being blacked out or looking like areas with units in.
