RE: What Makes A Good Tutorial In Games?

in #gaming8 years ago

I'm not sure if its still in place but 7 Days to Die got on my nerves when they added things you needed to complete at the start of each game.

I didn't mind doing it once but thought there should be an option to skip it. The game wanting me to do it made me get it out of the way rather that was how I wanted to start or not.

Granted it was just at the start of each new world but still it got old.

7d2d is a great example of how not to do it. It fails to follow natural player game progression. They force you to do things just to complete it that you have no use for and are not needed that its just a waste of time. Having to build a "shelter" right away when its not needed at that time. If they rearrange things a bit and even time gated stuff it would be much better.

For instance, if it was a couple of hours before nightfall that is a goo time for player to start thinking about making a sleeping bag, and either building or reinforcing shelter to survive the night in.
