The top 10 coolest or iconic monsters/enemies in video game history.
Haven't done a post like this in a long time, and felt like doing something a bit different from my video game reviews today so we're going back into it. Today, I wanted to talk about what I feel is the top 10 of the coolest, or most interestingly designed enemies/monsters in video games. This list doesn't include any specific big bosses or anything like that, and more or so focuses on the smaller enemies that make up the bulk of certain games. I don't feel like most people really ever think too hard into the smaller enemies of games and which are really rad or creative, so why not Zoidberg? Wait, no, that's not right. Uh, oh. Why not me? This list is in a specific order, ranking them from 10-1 in how much I enjoyed them, though if they're making this list then I definitely like them a lot.
10. Head Crabs from Half Life
These nasty little critters are some of the most iconic enemies you can think of when talking about a first person shooter game, at least in my opinion. They're some of the most common enemies that you'll encounter in the Half Life series, and also the creepiest by far. They jump about 3-4 meters into the air, and have the ability to eat human brains and during the process manage to take over their human host and turn them into zombies. They're very reminiscent of the facehuggers from Alien/Aliens, which might be part of the reason why I love them so much. These creepy little buggers definitely deserve to be on the list.
9. The Daedra from TES: Oblivion/Skyrim
The Daedra are a group of spiritual beings that inhabit the realm of Oblivion. They are viewed as demons by the normal citizens of the world, and come in all kinds of different forms. You're introduced to them in the Oblivion game, as they tear open portals to our world and begin their invasion. They've also been brought into the game via evil characters who believe they can use them to fulfill their own goals, usually ending up in their death. They are some of the most brutal, awesomely designed foes in the elder scroll universe. I know plenty of people were dying to get into a set of Daedra armor, because it's just got a lot of cool factor to it and they were some of the most interesting enemies we were introduced to. They're definitely some of the coolest enemies around, and definitely one of the most memorable.
8. The Witch from Left 4 Dead
Anyone who has played Left 4 Dead/Left 4 Dead 2 should be well familiar with this enemy type, as it definitely made sure either chaotic hilarity or frustrating annoyance ensued as soon as you alerted her to your presence. The Witch is an enemy type that you should always try to avoid as much as possible, as they have a knack for extreme violence and tearing you to pieces within seconds. Should you anger a Witch, you'll have to try and rely on Teamwork to bring her down. But, you can place a sure best that one of you is probably going to go down in the process. While she has a fairly meek appearance, she's one tough ass foe that you don't wanna piss off. She is certainly one of the more interesting enemy types within video games, and surely deserves a spot on this list.
7. Super Mutants from the Fallout series
Super Mutants are definitely one of the most iconic enemies that you'll encounter throughout the entire series of Fallout. These monstrous beings are far bigger, stronger and taller than any other humanoid beings in the universe of Fallout. They are immune to pretty much any and all disease or radiation, and are basically immortal as they can regenerate their cells and don't age. They're also quite insane and love to kill just about anything that comes within their peripheral view. Their weapons of choice range from giant bats or pipes to mini guns and other large firearms. They have some of the most iconic bits in the games, and provide quite a bit of entertainment and challenge. They definitely belong on this list, as they're some of the most interesting enemies you'll find in a video game.
6. Balverines from Fable/Fable: The Lost Chapters
Probably the most iconic enemy type out of any of the Fable games is the Balverine, a werewolf like creature that you'll run into during your travels. Born from one man who survived the attack of the Balvorn, these creatures seek to infect other humans with their bite turning more and more people into their own kind. Well, between killing and eating people that is. If bitten during a full moon, the victim will transform into a White Balverine, a much larger and more aggressive variant. I have vivid memories in my childhood of trying to either outrun or slay these creatures and there are plenty of moments that stuck with me along the way. While not being one of the most original type of enemies, the lore around them and their frightening tenacity definitely earn them a place on this list. (Though, my love of werewolves may or may not influence this one a bit.)
5. The Elites from Halo/Halo 2/Halo 3
The Elites have to be one of the most iconic enemies that you encounter throughout the Halo series. These alien warriors are cunning, fierce and quite strong. These guys form the backbone of their military force, and using their technology make for some of the most challenging foes that you can encounter in a game. They stand at around 8 feet tall sporting some cool armor with their intimidating reptilian like appearance. Not only do these guys present a challenge on their own, they hold command over quite a few lesser forces within the Covenant and will launch wave after wave of enemies at you before making their own move. I've got so many memories of these guys that there was no way I couldn't put them on the list.
4. Big Daddies from Bioshock
The Big Daddy is no doubt the most iconic enemy from the entire Bioshock series, which is saying something when there are so many great and interesting enemies within the franchise. The Big Daddy is an intimidating, silent guardian of the Little Sisters you'll find down in Rapture, though there are plenty of them roaming around as well. These guys are genetically enhanced human beings who have had their bodies grafted into giant diving suits, making them a tough nut to crack. They can be brutal and forceful enemies to deal with, often soaking up a lot of damage before finally going down. They have one of the coolest designs I've ever seen in a game, and their primary weapons are very different from the normal sort using things like a giant drill or a rivet gun for arms.
3. The Clickers from The Last Of Us
These are hands down some of the most iconic zombies you've ever seen in a video game. The Clickers are the 3rd stage of infection that you'll see in The Last Of Us, sporting some gruesome appearances thanks to the fungus growing out of their faces. While being blind, they possess superhuman strength and use echolocation through the act of clicking noises to determine what is around them. They can take more than one gunshot to the head before dying, making them quite a tough foe as well as being deadly. These guys are some of the most neat zombies I've ever seen, so they make a spot on the list!
2. Deathclaws from the Fallout series
I would have to say that the Deathclaw is probably the most frightening enemy you'll encounter within the Fallout universe, it also happens to be one of the toughest by far. Deathclaws are super strong, agile and resilient creatures that you'll encounter out in the wasteland. They were originally created via genetic engineering to try and replace human troops on the battlefield. These 10 foot walking death machines provide a very strong challenge to conquer in the Fallout universe, and as far your typical monster designs go these things look awesome. Their appearance is that of a reptilian species, looking almost like a hulking dragon monster that's been mixed in with several other things. Their huge claws can tear you apart in seconds, and they eat up firearm damage like champ. These are no doubt the most iconic monsters in Fallout by far I would say, and had to be put on this list.
1. Necromorphs from the Dead Space series
Well, I'm sure this probably didn't come as much of a surprise. Yes, the Necromorphs from the Dead Space series are my favorite enemy type from any game. These reanimated corpses have mutated and been reshaped into gruesome, gorey figures via an alien infection that recombines DNA structure. These creatures are the entire driving force for the Dead Space series, and the only goal they have it to find more bodies to continue to spread the infection further and further. The creatures are controlled by use of objects known as the Markers by a group of entities known as the Brethren Moons, giant necromorphs that have come to be by killing and mutating an entire planets population into one being. The purpose of the necromorphs is to create more of these giant creatures via a convergence event. These monsters are a hive mind in all kinds of forms, and are almost unkillable due to their nervous system structure and the fact that they're already dead. Realizing that blasting off their heads wasn't enough to put them down was one of the most scary and fascinating things to me as a kid, and these enemies with their vast lore and brutal designs engraved themselves into me. I truly think they're some of the most iconic creatures in video game history, and by far my favorite.
Well, there's my list of enemies or monsters from video games. What do you think of it? What would your list look like if you were to make one? I'm very curious why types of creatures or enemies you think are the most iconic or coolest and why. So, feel free to leave a comment down below with your answers, as I do like rewarding people who participate in on discussions :) Thanks for checking out my post! Hope you've enjoyed it!
Where's Pyramid Head?! Where's Bahamut!? Where's Lavos!? Where's Kefka?! Where's Nemesis?! Oh man, I could go on for days. We've had some assholes to kill in the video game world. Ruby and Emerald Weapon?! I can't get started.
Haha. I mentioned earlier on in the post that I wasn't doing any bosses/main villains for this post, I was just trying to stick with the small fry style enemies that make up the bulk of most of what you're fighting against. Trust me, if I was doing the bigger guys you would have seen plenty of Silent Hill/Resident Evil stuff on here, lol.
Ahh, I see! I'm stupid! What about the Marlboro's and Behemoths in the FF series? Lickers from RE?! Crazy hamburger meat looking like mother fuckers from Doom!? Little helmet-looking-like bastards from Megaman!?
Bruh, I only had 10 spots to fill, lol. I CAN'T FIT IN ALL OF THE GOOD STUFF, MANNN.
Oh, and I didn't use the Lickers from RE because I included them in another list before and I didn't wanna seem repetitive or anything, though I'm sure almost no one remembers a post that old.
I saw you playing RE7 earlier, by the way. You liking it so far, bro? If I see you on tonight I'll hop in a party chat with you and shoot the shit for awhile.
Not sure it counts as a monster, but my most memorable bad guy moment was the conversation with Sovereign in Mass Effect.
That was a great moment in the Mass Effect trilogy for sure! I really need to go back through and play the first 2 games at least, especially the second one. Absolutely loved the ever living fuck out of that game. But, yeah, I tried sticking with more lesser creatures/enemies than outright villains or bosses from series for this post, so I couldn't include any characters/moments like that. That will be for another time :)
Fair! T'was a great list regardless.
I wish I had time to play through them again. Seems I can't get big enough chunks of time these days. Have to settle for watching let's plays and reading nostalgia inducing lists.
Haha
I didn't recognize many of those monsters but maybe I am a bit older then you? This one got me pretty good the first time I encountered it.
Ah, you very well could be. I'm in my mid twenties so I'm not all that old, though a fair amount of these enemies/monsters range from 2003 until now.
And, oh yeah! I absolutely love the Licker introduction in RE2. I used the Licker for another list previously around Halloween, so I didn't want to reuse him here again. But, he is definitely one of my all time favorites. I've actually got a little 4x4 painting of a Licker hanging up on my wall, haha.
I am 35 and the majority of my gaming would have been between 1990 and 2005. So that is probably why. I wish I had more time for gaming but I am just too damn busy these days. The gaming posts are cool though cause I get to reminisce.
Yeah, those lickers are ugly, its cool that you have a little painting of one.
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R series has some of the creepiest looking monsters I've seen in a game. This one is the Bloodsucker. It turns invisible... Takes a lot of ammo to take down if you can't see the damn thing...
That's a solid choice as well! The Stalker series is pretty undervalued, in my opinion. I really don't feel like enough people have run through them or even know about them. Pretty good horror games, in my opinion :)
Agreed. One of those (or rather three) hidden gems. Their use of atmosphere and level design to scare the crap out of you is awesome. I don't mind the open air levels. You pack an AK with a fair bit of ammo to keep the packs of dogs at bay and you're fine, but when it comes time to head underground it's like "Oh crap, I just know there's gonna be all sorts of beasties down there."
I once had to choose between taking out a military base manned by maybe 15 or 20 soldiers or face one psy-mutant (I think it was a controller) in an underground tunnel complex. I chose the base...
edit
The fact that you can drink vodka to cure radiation poisoning is also pretty cool!
My favorites are the Witch from L4D and Big Daddies. Big Daddies are just badass so there's no argument, but witches were just so scary when that game came out...
Those crabs make me want to throw up.
Interesting games are my styles
I gat so much love for them
Kudos to @deadspace 👍
