Steam - A Haven for Scammers

For the past month I've been keeping a log of the Steam scam attempts I've received.

For some reason, my account is particularly attractive to them. I get added randomly by these guys, I never have to approach them. It's probably due to some of the nice CS:GO skins I have.

I've been added by 12 scammer accounts over the month.

I have reported each account that has attempted to scam me, and so far Steam has taken no action on _any_ of the accounts.

NOTE: I almost without fail finish my conversations with the scammers suggesting they kill themselves.  Please excuse my vulgarity in the screencaps and chat logs :)

I also try my best to waste as much of their time as possible.

Scammer 1: LuckyMan

The scam works like this:

• They say they need a player for a CS:GO tournament because a friend dropped out.
• They send you a discord invite to a discord server but you have no chat permissions.
• Their 'friend' is the admin and is afk right now.
• Send you the rules, it's a malicious file with his malware. Nothing too sophisticated.

I reported his account (I didn't save profile links when I started logging these, unfortunately) and uploaded the file to virus scanning sites.

Scammer 2: Bella

This one got interesting.

So there are no timestamps on Steam chatlogs, but I took some time to find out who owns skinsbeat.com.

Turns out it's owned by a man called Jenya Udovitskiy living in Mykolayiv, Ukraine. Later on I figured out Bella is not Jenya, but instead is someone who's a part of his operation.

He owns multiple sites, including: skinsbeat.com, skinsburning.com, csobey.com, csgorate.pro, skinsfighting.com, spacebet.pro

Here's how his operation works:

• Jenya sets up the websites.
• He advertises his fake site service on various Russian cheating forums.
• He gives the links to scammers and they get a percentage for each person they scam.

(This scam with "I can't withdraw from this dodgy website" came up the most.)

Now, clearly my threat of reporting him really rattled Jenya.

He added me on one of his own steam accounts:

So this one's kinda funny, I just didn't even give it a chance to go through. 

I haven't actually played CS:GO in forever.

Also note that some of these guys will add you then leave it a few days before messaging to make it seem like they are a friend, that's what this guy tried.

So this scam is different, but I've seen it a few times now.

They claim to be the owner of a CS:GO gambling site and they can fix the games to make you the winner.

In reality, you're just going to get scammed in the process.

Scammer 6: DM

This one was trying to impersonate another Steam user.

His profile has some hilarious language in it as well.

If you look at his username history, he has tried to impersonate different users under this account.

I wasted this guy's time a lot, but it's the same scam as Scammer 2: "Help plz cant withdraw from this site"

Mid-conversation he removed me as a friend and added me again to try make it seem like he added me from the other account.

Spotting Scammers

1. 99% of people who add you randomly will be scammers - don't trust a single word they say.

(Two more scammers. A CS:GO gambling admin who only has 23 hours on CS:GO and no skins and the other one is an impersonator of a gambling site bot)

2. To view someone's inventory click the button on the right panel, not one provided on the profile description or ones they give you in chat. If they are different you can be sure it's a scam.

3. Anyone messaging you about external sites betting or otherwise - total bullshit.

4. To get someone's profile link from the chat use the drop down arrow, not links they give you. If they are different it's a scam :O

5. Just because an account has a lot of hours, a high rank, friends and all that doesn't mean much. Steam levels aren't too difficult to attain, you just need to do some "tasks" and get badges. I was surprised with how much effort was put into setting up some of the accounts.

Conclusions

I know that Steam shouldn't have to accept responsibility for people who get scammed but the very least they could do is ban the accounts that are clearly scamming.

The scammers know that Steam won't ban their accounts at this stage and as a result they have become a lot more brazen, many of them are using personal accounts with many hours and lots of money put into them.

Steam should be able to flag certain domains that appear in chat or on profiles.

I'm not entirely sure what the issue is. Is support understaffed? I submitted one report via a support ticket and I got a response within a few days but no action was taken.

Some of these cases are really straightforward - it's blatant from the persons profile if they are impersonating someone - and still no bans.

At the end of all this I'm pretty fed up with Steam's lack of effort to stop this shit.
