Repop.world (and what ever happened to Cryptocelebrities?)

in #gaming6 years ago

Well, it is a fast moving Dapp market, and the trend for most Dapp games seems to be a quick surge of activity and interest while people try to exploit a new market, followed by a quick dropoff in interest, as the market becomes bloated, or bots move in and seize all of the quick opportunities.
What more can we expect when gaming is built upon currency transactions?
I'm sorry, but I remember when games were played because they were fun, not profitable. I think there might be a slight difference between playing Monopoly and playing daytrader on a currency exchange, although the bloodlust and reckless abandon might be the same in both.
Boardwalk or bust, right?

It would appear that everyone who bought a Cryptocelebrity might have gone bust.
Prices soared during a month of frenzied "hot potato" with the top celebrities (I'm looking at you Donald Trump) reaching 150eth price tags.

It appears that old habits die hard, and some HODLers will just... hodl. Sorry 9hil, I'm sure a 56% discount on Opensea.io seemed like a steal at the time.
For the next couple months, the CC discord was a mix of hopeless optimism, vicious pessimism, and cries for blood, as timelines expired, the website was put offline for "game restructuring" and then eventually... disappeared, along with the last of everyone's hope.
Here is the final tally of the amount of Ethereum that was tied up in this Dapp when it went the way of the dinosaurs.

1,392 eth, which at the game's peak would have translated to 1.53 million USD
Sorry folks, it was a good run.
One of the ideas circulating around the CC discord while people waited for hope that never arrived was a game restructuring that would allow people to "breed" their celebrities, something like Cryptokitties does, that adds more of a "gameplay" element.
Little did they know that such a game was already launching, and that Dapp is Repop.world
I think that if this Dapp had launched before Cryptocelebrities, that it could have been the next Cryptokitties as it seems to have solved many of the issues that led to the death of Cryptocelebrities: and who knows, it could happen.
Let me divulge.
CC was nothing but a game of "hot potato," selling an ERC token with a picture of a celebrity snatched from Wikipedia slapped on it, then hoping that someone else would come along and buy it from you for more than you payed.
Repop.world releases "gen0 celebrities" something like the gen0 cryptokitties. These celebrities are all orignal pieces of artwork, cartooned with admirable attention to detail.
The auctions of these gen0 celebrities last for around 2-4 days, during which time it is still a game of "hot potato" with the big difference of the auction coming to an end, leaving one person as the indefinite owner of that ERC token, with the option to either resell that celebrity or auction off their "genes."
This is where the gameplay element comes in, and it's turning out to be quite interesting.

The celebrities seem to have body and facial traits tied to them that can then in turn be passed down to their offspring as can be seen with this clone.

You can breed the celebrities that you own, via gen0 auctions or private sales, and either breed them with each other or with genes that you purchase off of the gene marketplace.
The game is still relatively new but has a dedicated responsive team that is active in its discord channel and is showing plenty of talent and promise: it should be exciting to see what gameplay developments are around the corner!
You can check them out here, and with the right browser ethereum wallet, participate in the game play.
