The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild - It doesn't get any better than this

BOTW-Share_icon.jpg

The legend of Zelda has been with us now for over 30 years. As a series, it has taken various shapes over the years - we have explored Hyrule in the dark and realistic Ocarina of Time, a boat in the cartoon Wind Waker and maneuvered trains in the portable Spirit Tracks.

However, the essence of the games has always been the same: we have been challenged based on various magical objects and instruments, explored temples, and battled against enemies using swords and bows. The exception has been the first The Legend of Zelda - a game that was early on with the concept of "open world". The adventure was explored at its own pace and on its own accord and the game gave minimal clues about where we would go next. Just how i like it.

Taking care of its history

When The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild was introduced, we were told that Nintendo remade the fundamental foundation of the game completely and looked back while the adventure at the same time would be put in an open world. It was a brave step for such a conservative company as Nintendo. Taking one of their most loved series, throwing away everything and rebuilding, is a risk that can always harm a brand. But in the case of Nintendo, it did not happen, on the contrary. With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild the Japanese game giant redefines the way we look at open game worlds; A concept that is all too often synonymous with huge, empty titles full of superfluous and repetitive moments.

The result is a title that takes care of its history carefully and partly with references to old games.

A vast nostalgic open world for you to explore

The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of The Wild has been in development for over five years. Considering how different the game is - while maintaining the patented The Legend of Zelda feel, we are very impressed with Nintendo's work. It combines the best from the adventure series with neat puzzles and brilliant designs, while it is completely drenched by Dark Souls-scented challenges and a finely-tuned role playing system.

And with role play, we mean the fact that most things that Link collects can be upgraded without forcing us through a crushed "level" system such as Final Fantasy XV. Instead, Nintendo focuses on the fundamentals while attracting a huge world of walking around in and exploring.

The biggest change ever made

Many of these elements have certainly been added as the journey has progressed. We were already in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword collect resources to upgrade anything & everything. The open world appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess with the core problem off it feeling empty. In Breath of The Wild, Nintendo releases all the inferences and invests in full. This is the biggest change the series has ever gone through, and it's only to the positive.

Despite the fact that the world is huge and the view stretches, it is never ever boring to walk around Hyrule. On the road between point A and point B, I am marveled at the transition of nature from high grass-covered plateaus to desert worlds and snow-covered areas. Nintendo has also found a perfect balance between puzzles, battles and explorations - and the side performances rarely feel irrelevant in ways we experienced in the Far Cry series, for example.

Wood is not that efficient against fire. Go figure...

The key to success in The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of The Wild is to be yet discovered. For example, a wood shield is a really stupid idea against fire-arrows and explosive boxes, while a metal sword is not particularly compatible with thunder. At the same time, rain is your perfect friend when you sneak away from enemies, as your footsteps are hidden and steps are heard less. Everywhere we are encouraged to take the step forward and look around on our own, just like in the NES classic from 1986. Nintendo rarely holds us in the hand and it is basically possible to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild entirely in its own way.

Strategy is the key

For our help during the escapades in Hyrule we have a so-called Sheikah Slate. It gives Link magic abilities and allows him to induce bombs, utilize magnetism and freeze time. All of these elements come in handy with the various challenges, where our logical assessment thinking capability is always being tested. Several times we stop and think: "Is this mountain too steep to climb?" Or "is there a better way to go to get forward faster?". Breath of The Wild is our own sandbox in Hyrule reincarnation and the pleasure of defeating just that challenge with just that solution is crazy.

Bosses require you to keep on your toes & think strategically

For strategic thinking is a must in the game. Unlike many previous episodes in the series, The Legend of Zelda's Breath of The Wild is sometimes so unforgiving that it takes a lot of effort before we reach the finish line. It can be as simple as surviving an attack by a group of enemies. I always need to keep in mind my choice when it comes to arms because no single strategy lasts forever, and that also applies when it comes to shields and bows. They do not tolerate any treatment and we need to constantly take a break from the main adventure to find new objects to kill the monsters with.

This is adventure-platforming at it's absolute finest

Partly the same goes in the way i fill Links Health. Forget the pursuit of the hearts - now it's cooking that applies. By collecting ingredients from Hyrules all corners, we can compose culinary ceremonies that both give Link better health and make him faster, improve fitness, and make him take more beatings. It is a matter of constantly having a thick supply of food - the risk of getting whipped on the battlefield is otherwise very big.

Having said that, there is never any doubt that it's a The Legend of Zelda game we are talking about. We get acquainted with a number of well-known areas, and none of these feel reused or placed "just because" but fills a natural part of Hyrule.

One of the best game stories

I recommend The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild as not only the best The Legend of Zelda game so far, but perhaps also one of the absolute top games of history. This is a title we will talk warmly about for many years to come and that sets a new gaming climate level, not just for Nintendo, but also for upcoming games in the genre.

With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild, Nintendo shows that a 30-year-old series like The Legend of Zelda is still relevant. Until the next part, I look forward to spending hundreds of hours in the open gaming world, perhaps only to enjoy the design, the environments and the meditative feeling.

The thunder effects are one of my favorites in the game, watch out if you got metal on you though, you might get shocked!
