@officialfuzzy 's Thoughts on Gamification
We all know the myth, the man, the legend @officialfuzzy . He is one of Steemit's OG tech shamans, especially after what he went through this past week. He continues to lead us Steemians in a direction influenced by real, positive change not greed and ego.
Sorry, I went a little old school and transcribed his thoughts manually and for me personally, these are the best nuggets of knowledge about gamification & its benefits to humanity from the Beyond Bitcoin Whaletank Hangout #218 this past Friday. Here they are [emphasis mine]:
"This is a place where I have actually spent the majority quote on quote studying time in my life, maybe besides Bitcoin. I am a little bit rusty on this one compared to Bitcoin these days.
But one of the things that is amazing about gamification and learning is that one of the biggest struggles for people with learning is:
- just starting out,
- and fearing failure.
The fear of failure itself is sometimes what holds people back from evolving and growing. And taking the risks that are required to evolve and grow.
One of the cool things that experts in this space kind of look at is the value in/of gamification and if you think about a person who is playing a video game there not afraid to fight that monster and fail right.
And as a matter of fact the process of growing is a series of failures and then overcoming those failures, which ironically is very much paralleling how games are designed.
So now when you add into the situation a communal type of environment where people are using something called scaffolding, where they are looking at each other’s expertise and leveraging that to lower the risk for learning. For instance if I am learning something from Xeroc about something in the blockchain space, its less risky for me if I have a guru or someone who knows something more than I do next to me.
So when you have the gamification of learning and you have a collection of people who gather together at the same thing to use this. You have this extremely powerful synergy that comes from it. You can actually teach people things very well and make it so they remember it much better through experiential learning, as opposed to what they call in this sphere of psychology and stuff they call it rote memorization where you have flashcards and you just say I am going to stuff information in my head and hopefully I remember it. But humans don’t really work that way. We do to a degree, but we need meaning to really assign a memory, a strong memory to something.
So when we create meaning and when we actually push forward together we also create a sense of comradery and this sense that the risk is very much lower and that the benefits are much higher. And when you do that you are breaking down the barrier that often stops us from growing and often holds us back from fighting the demons in that fantasy world that we deal with.
Because that’s a very strong platform, a foundation to build your or individual peoples’ perception of the world into something where you don’t fear trying. You don’t fear bringing that value.**
So with that said I have much more input…"
As you can see, @officialfuzzy is as passionate about gamification as SG's (Steemit Gaming) team. It seems like we both understand and envision a world where barriers and stereotypes are broken down and any human, doesn't matter race , gender, income status, or environment, can learn and progress through their life journey as intended.
Even with my inclusion in the gamification and education space, I learned so much from @officialfuzzy and his comments. They were passed onto the team and definitely took us all to the next level. Like you said after some years of work at something it's hard to keep pushing. But you do anyways, knowing that one day someone will see the vision and make it so.
I hope this brings value to the Steemit community as we are going to be the new wave of humans helping save humanity. Gamification will be one of the tools to do it. That's why this epic community was built. To use tools to create:
Real, positive change.
Not greed and ego.
We can't let Steemit become like the rest of the world.
And it looks like @officialfuzzy is trying his darnest to make sure that doesn't happen. Props to you @official you truly are one of the leaders of Steemit.
