Planescape: Torment Review

in #gaming8 years ago (edited)

What can change the nature of a man? Enter Sigil, The City of Doors, and find out! Released in 1999, Planescape: Torment is widely regarded as one of the greatest RPG's of all time, and for good reason! Although the graphics and gameplay may not be as polished and combat heavy as modern games, the storytelling is second to none. You play as The Nameless One, waking up in the Mortuary with no memory of who you are or how you got there, with a talking skull named Morte as your only companion (for now).

After escaping from the Mortuary, you're free to start pursuing the mysteries of your identity and immortality (upon death you find yourself once again in the Mortuary, The Nameless One cannot die). Sigil is aptly named as The City of Doors because it is littered with portals, requiring only the correct key to send you throughout the multiverse to other planes of existence. It is also, however, referred to some as "The Cage", as these portals are the only way in or out of the city.

The game features seven possible companions with a maximum party size of six, counting yourself. If you're not careful, some of them are easily skippable! One of Planescape's most defining traits is the impact of Player Choice on the game world, and your playthrough.

There are three playable classes: Fighter, Mage, and Thief which can be changed for the most part at any point throughout the game depending on your needs. There are multiple ways to confront all of the problems that you encounter, giving it great replayability, not to mention there will be a significant amount of content that you may or may not discover on your first playthrough - such is the nature of the beast.

The combat is similar to other games of it's time in that you can pause the game during a fight to issue commands to your party members which will then be executed upon resuming. The fighting isn't this game's claim to fame though, Planescape is almost a living breathing novel that you can travel through and interact with. Seriously. This game's script has over a million words.

I give Planescape: Torment an honest 9.5/10, this is not a game to be missed! It's available on GOG for only $9.99
