Matchfixing in eSports

in #gaming7 years ago

Matchfixing has been an issue for a long time in eSports. Many teams are getting banned because of it and still people keep doing it.The associations have worked alongside the rest of the industry to fight against the illegal betting that has continued to threaten the foundation of eSports but there are always going to be cases of matchfixing.

StarCraft matchfixing

In 2010, several Korean players and programmers were accused of matchfixing by a North American player. These allegations were eventually confirmed, and 11 players were banned from KeSPA and received fines and other penalties.

League of Legends matchfixing

League of Legends as one of the most popular eSports game has many cases of matchfixing. In 2014, a top Korean League of Legends player and his manager were accused of matchfixing by KeSPA. That scandal took a tragic turn when the accused player attempted suicide after confessing to taking part in the matchfixing.

The iBUYPOWER CSGO matchfixing scandal

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was the result of a game played on August 20, 2014 between North American teams iBUYPOWER and NetcodeGuides.com in Season 5 of the CEVO Professional League. Despite being heavy favorites, iBP was defeated 16-4.

Though evidence surfaced immediately indicating that the match had been fixed, the story was dismissed as rumor and blew over until a follow-up article was published on January 16, 2015 by the original journalist, Richard Lewis. In it, he reveals various pieces of leaked evidence directly implicating multiple members of the IBP team as having bet against themselves and then deliberately losing the match.Lewis and Courtney Timpson, a CS:GO Lounge employee, were able to identify a large number of unusually high volume bets by Duc “cud” Pham and dboorN, who were connected to members of the iBP team.

Where and how does it happen ?

It literally is happening everywhere around the world.eSports is a really big industry nowadays so don't be surprised if it happens in your country at some point. It may seem hard to believe but but it makes more sense in Korea, where eSports is incredibly popular and potentially lucrative. The idea is that certain teams, coaches and players can throw the game while simultaneously betting on the outcome they know will happen and winning lots of money that way. Betting on eSports has become fairly commonplace in South Korea.
