Grim Dawn - Review

What it is about?

I started playing ARPGs decades ago, Diablo, Diablo2, NOX, Path Of Exile, Diablo 3, Torchlight, Torchlight 2, tried every single of them probably. After Diablo2 there was time when i could not find any good ARPG to play, it seems love for Diablo kind of games is for forever.

This was time when Brian Sullivan and Eric Campanella made for us pure diamond - Titan Quest. It was different and very interesting to play. Skill tree system was was very simple and complicated at same time. You could craft many builds by choosing 2 classes and their skill trees.

After Brian and Eric left Iron Lore Entertainment they created their own studio Crate Entertainment and started work on new game, Black legion, soon they understood that it was very complicated and big game, so they halted development and immediately started another one - Grim Dawn. This game is a successor of Titan's Quest. Skill system is same, you can choose 2 classes and their skill trees. Couple of days ago it had new DLC, __Ashes of Malmouth __expansion. Which added new classes and skills.

Gameplay

Now i must say in front, despite having multiplayer option, it does not feel like Diablo 3 or Path of Exile, this game is Singleplayer, it meant to play solo. And it's name is really representing it's nature. You can not find rainbows and ponies here, everything is grim and dark.

Since last expansion you can choose from 8 classes in Grim Dawn, each of them has it's own skill tree. First one you can take on level 2, and second class on level 10.

On the map, there are shrines which are giving you devotion points, and you spend them on constellation map, for me personally it has some kind of similarity to Path of Exile skill tree, but very minor one.

Level cap is 100 right now, as in almost any ARPG there are tons of loot, which you have to pick up and carefully compare to your own items. also game has pretty good crafting system. crafting components are dropping from monsters, and are used either to craft items (rare, epic or legendary) or to enchant items you already have.

Also there are factions in this game, doing quests, killing monsters will increases your standings to them, but it also decrease standing to monsters, and further it decreases more powerful monsters will spawn.

Conclusion:

9/10

If you love ARPG games, this game is for you, there could not be second thought on this. Game is not something new in this genre, it's oblivious successor to Titan Quest , it is orientated to singleplayer, still you can spend hundreds of hours in it slashing monsters left and right, crafting materials and items, trying to improve your items by 1%, and that is what we love in Diablolike ARPG-s.
