[ENGLISH] Thoughts on Outlast

in #gaming8 years ago (edited)

A couple of years ago was released Outlast to the market, a game that at the time was quite successful and still is so, 6 months later was released the DLC: Whistleblower, which added additional hours of game in addition to allowing us to know a little more the background of the game. It is expected that for the 2017 comes the second part of this great game. In this post I share a not very extensive analysis on Outlast.

(Also, I want to warn you that this game contains scenes that can be disturbing and disgusting to some people, so if you want to play it, do it at your own risk)

Outlast

Outlast is a psychological horror videogame developed and published by Red Barrel Games, a company founded by several developers of other great titles like Assassin’s creed, Splinter Cell and among others.

This fragment was taken from https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlast. I did the traslation for the fragment that I used

In this game we take the role of Miles Upshur, a daring journalist who visits the psychiatric hospital of Mount Massive, since an email from an anonymous informs him that horrors are being committed, attacking the rights and lives of people and the worst of all is that the Murkoff Corporation is benefiting from it. Our friend Miles intends to inform the world of the irregularities that are committed in this site. Our friend Miles intends to inform the world of the irregularities that are committed in this site. As good journalists we are, we must try to find out what really happens in this site, equipped with our camera, recording everything we see and then have legitimate evidence of what we live here. It should be noted that during our stay in the asylum we will find almost everything ... hundreds of dead bodies, patients of aberrant experiments, physically and psychologically deformed, some calm and others aggressive that try to harm us as soon as possible, so obviously we must avoid them. As an additional detail, for lovers of research and history, we will find documents with patient information, the Murkoff Corporation or something else related to the sanatorium.

One of our most treasured gadgets will be our camera, with which we can record everything we see or happen to us, and not only that, it will also help us to move through the corridors and darker rooms of the Mount Massive hospital, we can choose not to record at all times, however, it is advisable to create notes written by the protagonist expressing his opinion about what he records and leaving evidence in case he cannot get out of there...

Outlast has mostly psychological terror (one of my favorites by the way) with a few jump scares, which will make our mind stay alert to any threat that may arise, being in the corridors of a sanatorium full of disturbed people (which in itself is already very traumatic) we will find ourselves in closed rooms, corridors and dark rooms for which we will have to make use of the night vision of the camera. Of course things will not be so quiet, in addition to worrying about finding a way out of such a disturbing place, we must also keep enemies at bay by making use of stealth and our ingenuity, and in case they see us, we must run and hide immediately if we do not want to die. I take this moment to mention that the A.I. (Artificial intelligence) of our enemies is not very good, since we can escape from them very easy, also if we managed to hide from them, they will not look much, (if you have played you will know what I mean), although of course, It is very distressing that some amorphous guy with super strength is chasing us.

The game itself is quite good despite being fairly short, what happens is that after a couple of hours of play things become quite predictable, however, it will be 5-6 hours of high tension.

As for the ambiance and the sound...

The atmosphere is quite good, it really gives the feeling of being in a place from which you want to get out of there as fast as possible, on the other hand the sound in my opinion is also very good and adapts appropriately to the different situations of suspense. These two together make the gaming experience very pleasant and at the same time terrifying.

In conclusion Outlast is a good game for lovers of survival horror, and although it is quite short guarantees us a good game experience with a lot of scares and tense moments.
