Somebody remade the 1990s VR classic 'Dactyl Nightmare' for Oculus! N o s t a l g i a b o m b
Perhaps you read my past article on the dark ages of VR. When the resolution was so low, it was like staring at legos, and the framerate was a gut churning slideshow. All for the low, low price of just $60,000!
If you did, you'll know how mystifying even that dismal technology was to us peasants back in the day, and how cruelly over-promised VR was. We were told there'd be something on the same level of quality as Virtuality arcade setups in the home by the year 2000 at the latest.
Dactyl Nightmare was one of those arcade games that was most people's first taste of VR. A hefty $5 for just 3 minutes of gameplay it nevertheless exploded minds across the country, including mine. It took much longer than we were promised, but we finally have a home version of Dactyl Nightmare.
On vastly superior hardware to boot! Of course now there's much better stuff to play, but it's the principle of the thing damnit.
Hopefully this is a portent of more VR nostalgia bait to come. I'd love to see all of those brief VR experiences we were charged out the ass for in the 1990s come to modern headsets, unlimited play time for a few bucks.
I also have this difficult to articulate desire for games of modern complexity, but in the flat shaded, faceted "1990s VR" style. Just to realize the dreams of 10 year old me about how home VR would be, exactly how I envisioned it. Why not? VR is here, we can have anything we want.
Anyhow, without further delay:
