Let's Make a Level for Duke Nukem 3D, Part 24

Alright, now that I have the spaceship set up to land properly with an earthquake effect so it rumbles while doing so, I am pretty much completely done with the starting area. I can now afford to devote my attention elsewhere. You know what I remembered while working on that effect?

This part from Super Metroid, where you can use a super bomb to break the glass tunnel, which then allows you to obtain an item visible just outside of it. It was a classic forehead banging moment for many young gamers, because how were we supposed to know the glass tunnel could be bombed?

Naturally, I had to re-create that classic scene in this map. Since it's already basically a tribute to Super Metroid, the inclusion seemed obligatory to me. I am unsure what item the player gets this way, as the rocket launcher would also be a good choice (since after you have the pipe bombs, you'll already have solved the only puzzle that needs explosives anyway).

The center portion of the tunnel is made from sprites with a unique hitag. This makes them destructible by any explosive weaponry. When we use a pipe bomb to blow up the center of the tunnel, remnants of either side will remain. All the plant life will be destroyed however, unavoidably.

Here's the tunnel ingame with the center section destroyed. It wiped out most but not all of the plants. I might put some rocks in there too, I don't know, it feels incomplete still for some reason.

I also don't know what will be on the other side of the tunnel. Probably a room where you can re-use one of the items you obtained to get another good item or weapon. These are optional though, and just help out with the boss battle mostly.

Anyway that's all for this time. Keep your eyes peeled for future installments!

My upvote definetely goes for the rocket launcher. I never played metroid but i like the tribute that you're paying to the game and the tunnel looks amazing :)

It wud look freat when you will add the cracking effect on the glass , to make it look more realistic ,
Another tging when you find out the bomb and use it for destroying the rock wall , some of then should fall down , managing sound is easy .,
The way you are making up a game it would really work , and i guess many among us will play it , it is really a great effort .

A rocket launcher would be awesome.

It's true how can one know this glass tunnel is supposed to be bombed, how can you bomb the centre section and destroy the plant life, maybe you wanted us to show us how it may look. On the other side you usually get weapons.

Is there anyway to perhaps cross this series over with the stickman series and hide a dildo on the other side of the tunnel? You know, the ultimate weapon of moist mass destruction.

I also think that there will be rooms on the other side of the tunnel. And in it to keep arms bomb explosives and various tools. Keep eyeing for the next episode.

It looks graphically eye catching. And the ideas you come up with. Mind blowing if you continue thinking on a thing you for sure do come up with a nerve wrecking solution. Anyways whats on the other side of tunnel lets see what you come up with. Actually it would be good if you start using previous resources that were explored to be used on other side of tunnel to explore a better thing.

The earthquake effect was used in the movie Jurassic Park, were the glass of water kept in a car shakes by the Waves originated from the movement of Dinosaur, hope the shake effect in your game is much impressive.

Your work and your ideas for the design are great. You always bring something that catches the attention. the tunnel is great. Thanks

It does feel kinda empty.
Great work as always :)

Don't worry it's soon going to full.empty is not an option for @alexbeyman

That is true.
Though incomplete would've been the better word not empty

I was thinking the same thing
