All competitive/online games are doomed to reach a peak and then start to decline until they're not profitable for the publishers anymore and get discontinued.
God! Even single player franchises sometimes.
Honestly, I think it's mostly about selling out. Tencent bought Riot Games, Activision bought Blizzard, etc...
