WipEout Omega Collection

Welcome back folks, it’s that time of the week again, time for your weekly game review fix.

Well this is a blast from the past, pun intended, and it's on my list of first PlayStation games ever play, and I'm talking way back on the PS1. I think I have probably said it a hundred times by now, I'm really not into racing games or sports games, but Wipeout holds a special nostalgic place in my gamer heart, well because it's history. It was one of those games you could actually play with friends, like Mortal Combat and Tekken, nothing like a good bit of competition between friends to prove who is the better person, I'm joking obviously.

There is this almost kind of zen feeling I get when playing Wipeout, and the best way to describe it, would be to acquit it to almost a form of meditation, especially when playing alone. You can absolutely zone out playing this, more so when you start doing time trails, after you have memorized every nook and cranny of a race track.

Unfortunately there is zero story when it comes to this game, unlike other games like Need for Speed, where there is a story that follows through.

This is a straight up futuristic racing game, on what looks like a Formula 1 hover craft that the human race will invent one day to come. Wipeout is more about progression and unlocking different race tracks and better ships as you go, and the only way to do so is to win. The original game which was released back in 1995, when everyone was still listening to Bon Jovi and Nirvana, and had a total of four teams each with two anti-gravity ships to choose from and only 7 race tracks. Today there are 26 tracks to unlock as well as more than 46 unique ship models, that you also have to unlock as you master the game.

What truly sets Wipeout apart from any other racing game is the smoothness of the experience, both in game play and when it come to the graphics, running at a constant frame rate at any resolution. Make no mistake Wipeout is not easy in any sense of the word, I'd personally put this up there with some of the most challenging games on the market. The first few tracks give you a false sense of achievement and by the time you get close to the halfway mark you'll be coming in dead last, and things start getting very tricky. The competition gets faster and more brutal, making better uses of their weapons and hitting more boost pads, the frustration gets very real.

"On a given day, a given circumstance, you think you have a limit. And you then go for this limit and you touch this limit, and you think, 'Okay, this is the limit'. And so you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high." - Ayrton Senna

The Omega Collection is a remaster of the previous two titles in the Wipeout series, namely Wipeout HD along with its Wipeout HD Fury expansion and Wipeout 2048.

There are also nine games modes that appear in Omega Collection, Zone, Tournament, Speed Lap, Time Trial and Single Race from HD, Zone Battle, Eliminator and Detonator from Fury, and the Career Mode from 2048. I was lucky enough to get this Wipeout collection as part of the the monthly PlayStation Plus subscription, where very month you get two and even sometimes three or four free games. I'm sure you'll be able to find this as a deal online or at you local game store, and it's a awesome game to have that you take your time with, maybe playing it in between other games.

In conclusion WipEout Omega Collection is a fantastic experience through and through, with tones of content to keep you busy for quiet some time. If you love racing games this is totally worth your time and an epic addition to anyone's collection.

Wipeout Omega Collection is a futuristic racing video game developed by the good people at XDev, Clever Beans and EPOS Game Studios published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4.

If you haven't heard of them don't worry, neither have I, they mostly helped to create and publish, titles such as LittleBigPlane, Heavenly Sword, Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls to name but a few. This installment will be the tenth standalone title in the Wipeout series and the first not developed by original developers Studio Liverpool, following the studio's closure in 2012. It is a remaster of the previous two entries in the series: Wipeout HD, its Wipeout HD Fury expansion and Wipeout 2048 which is the VR version of the game. The game was released on 6 June 2017.

I'm giving WipEout a rating of 6.5/10

@morkrock, Now that's called the Virtual Class Racing 🏁. Great to watch that video and hope that you are enjoying this super awesome game.

This game looks great and I already missed your video game reviews! I'm a car racing enthusiast, although in my daily life I don't like speed. My favorite driver is Michael Schumacher and Juan, my favorite taxi driver. LOL. I liked the quote from Ayrton Sena, another of the Formula greats who lost his life on the track. I think that maneuvering the possible cars of the future and at full speed, must be an amazing experience, especially if you live all day on broken roads and old cars. I'm sure I'm going to dream about driving one of these today. Greetings, @morkrock

The graphics alone deserve giving the game a try. It looks intense and exciting. I would have liked to have the time and resources to engage in video games. Other than an occasional visit to archades or a friend's loaned console, I do not game and if I did, I guess I'd rather play something with a story involved and some possibilities for catharsis :)
But that being said, race games are fun, period. I'm a terrible driver though, but I try to enjoy the ride.

From what you tell us and what we can see in the video, it must be a very wasteful game of adrenaline. Motor racing has never been my attraction, but it certainly is, and even more so if it is a futuristic vision. You notice a very advanced video technology work, which will surely have the players trapped. Thanks for your post, @morkrock.

Besides matches, racing is an interesting game to do. We can feel the sensation of traveling at high speed by maintaining stability especially when turning at high speeds. All that coupled with competition to reach the finish. No wonder fans of this game will feel involved in every competition. for me racing cars or motorbikes something tense, and of course exciting.
by your review we know the futuristic race.
Thank you @morkrock

Warm regard from Indonesia

I remember playing the PS1 game as a child, I didn't know if they're supposed to be spaceships or cars.
