Legendary Wings on NES

in #games7 years ago

There was no shortage of shoot-em-ups on the original Nintendo as it did seem to be what a majority of their releases focused on. Legendary Wings wasn't so different than the rest of them but it appealed to me because it had an almost mythological feel to it.

It was also a little bit different from other shooters in two way: You had two type of attacks - one for aerial and one for ground targets and 2) the stages alternated from vertical to horizontal gameplay.

By the way, in two-player mode if too much stuff got on the screen the game would slow down to an almost unplayable speed.

I particularly enjoyed the horizontal levels because there were certain portions of the environment that you could destroy. In fact, it was necessary to destroy these things or else you could end up getting trapped in the scrolling screen and squashed.

The bosses were huge and fun and while there weren't many powerups it was really really important to hang on to them since your base weapon was damn near useless.

I'm not sure how this game managed for the developers, but it was certainly one of the lessor known titles out there. The enemies would sometimes be kind of silly, just some floating eyes or something like that, but it was necessary since this game was meant to be taking place in a non spaceship sort of environment, which to me was most of the appeal.

I don't know if this would be fun for anyone today unless they had played the original back in the late 80's. For me though, it was a fun trip down memory lane
