Produce Music Videos with Make My Video Starring Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch – Today in Retro Gaming – October 15th, 1992

Okay, this is one of those releases for the Sega CD that have gamers scratching their heads. What was Sega thinking when this one got approved? You also have to realize there were at least two more releases in this series (INXS and Kris Kross). That makes it even more baffling that just the one starring future movie star, Mark Wahlberg was not the only release in this series. I bet the Transformers star wishes this part of his life would stop popping up. I present to you Make My Video Starring Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.

The idea behind these “games” was to put the gamer in the hot seat of producer/director for a music video. The idea is pretty simple and it worked, only really hindered by the licensed music and the media used to present the video.

The Sega CD was not powerful in the available colors on the screen at one time. This hurt the quality of the video quite a bit- a lot of it is unintelligible and just a mess.

The three songs included in each of these releases were usually at least one big hit and two lesser known songs. Make My Video Starring Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch featured Good Vibrations, I Need Money and You Gotta Believe (apparently Mark Wahlberg attended the Madonna school of spelling). Of these three songs, the only one I ever remember hearing on the radio or seeing on MTV was Good Vibrations.

The way the game is setup is interesting. There are clips on screen all playing simultaneously- synced to the music. Each of the three clips has a button assigned to it based on the available buttons on the Sega Genesis controller (A, B, C). When a clip pops up that you are interested in using you simply press that button and it is inserted. You could even play back your version of the music video and record it to a VCR if you had the right setup to do so (or wanted to be embarrassed in front of your friends that were playing REAL games on the Sega CD).

If this sounds interesting to you, or you just want to bring a copy to that next Mark Wahlberg autograph signing (just for kicks) then hit Ebay- I am sure you can get Make My Video Starring Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch rather cheap.
