Duckslayer Adventures Homage to Atari 2600 Classic

Modern independent homebrew developers often find inspiration in the classics. Take Duckslayer Adventures, by Herold de Oliveira Pinheiro, for instance – this is a homage to the classic game that kicked off the whole “Easter Egg” idea. Adventure on the Atari 2600.

While it is not going to have the same effect today as it did back in the early 80’s but it would be cool to see the recreation of the Easter Egg Warren Robinette made famous.

It is no secret that Duckslayer Adventures is based on Adventure. The developer has done some interesting work in improving the graphics and audio effects for the Sega Master System.

Enemies look like they should, objects are clearly objects, and there is even a bit of variety with the floor tiles in the backgrounds to help break up the monotony. Then there are the dragons.

No longer appearing to me more duck like, the dragons in Duckslayer Adventures are very much scary looking creatures that may strike fear in your heart the first few times you encounter one.

That is the point though. The dragons should strike up feelings of fear when they appear. The only problem I have with the dragons in Duckslayer Adventures is that there is absolutely no animation to them. Surely this is going to be worked on as the game continues development.

Duckslayer Adventures was originally submitted to the 2018 Coding Competition that SMS Power runs. That explains the lack of polish in this independent homebrew title. It also makes it excusable as this is obviously not meant to be a last version.

What is here is a great foundation for what surely will become a notable adventure for the Sega Master System. At the end of the day, isn’t that what we want? More great games for our beloved consoles?
