Doom on Nintendo Switch Sells Less than 100k Units in First Week of Retail

in #games7 years ago

The Nintendo Switch is not yet a year old, but we are already seeing lower numbers for third party games. Case in point, Doom from Bethesda Softworks reportedly sold less than 100,000 units in its first week at retail. Does this signal something about the Nintendo Switch that everyone is ignoring or is it just a case of an older game not withstanding fan interest?

According to VGChartz Doom sold:

47,364 units in the United States
21,877 units in Europe
3,564 units in the UK
4,851 units in Germany
5,301 units in France

Not stellar numbers but this could easily be due to the title being one that most gamers have already played elsewhere, or simply have grown tired of. Interestingly, VGChartz goes into detail on sales of Doom in the first week on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as well –

455,607 units on PlayStation 4
205,127 units on Xbox One

Keep in mind, Doom released on Nintendo Switch over a year and a half later than on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows. That is about 18 months of fans playing it on other platforms before it was made available for the Nintendo Switch.

I am no rocket scientist but I feel a more fair comparison would be to focus on titles that are released simultaneously, or close to it, across the four popular platforms.

There is a probable reason for these poor sales on Nintendo Switch that is not related to the age of the game. Maybe, just maybe, mature titles are not popular with the audience that has gravitated to the Switch? It could be possible, though I would like to see information on mature, or at least close to it, titles that see release closer together on all the major platforms before passing that judgment.

I was never a fan of Doom, i dont know why i just dont like it :(

I used to love playing the original but the later remakes and sequels give me motion sickness so I have not enjoyed them as much. In general I have gotten out of enjoying First Person Shooters for various reasons.

totally agree, i would rather play The Last of Us and Uncharted for 20 times <3 And cannot wait for God of War -.-

Now you are talking. I will take a good third person adventure over an FPS action game any day. I am not knocking FPS fans though, there are some good games in that genre, I am just not a fan of it any more.

Haha let me guess, Kilzone 2 for example ^^ Bloodborne ^^

We have a Sony Guy here haha

I am more of a God of War, Tomb Raider, Rascal, Spyro, etc fan myself.

As far as popular FPS's I would list Halo and even Doom, on something other than Switch.

Certainly the stereotype of Nintendo platforms since the Wii has been that they appeal to a more casual crowd, but I don't know that such generalizations are accurate. What about e.g. Skyrim? That was a similar situation, an aged PC/etc. title brought to Switch relatively recently--how did its numbers compare to Doom's?

Looking at VGChartz it appears that the Switch version of Skyrim V sold approximately 91,264 units in the USA alone in its first week.

http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly/43058/USA/ (Number 7 on the list).

Definitely happy to see it on switch though... hope they keep games (and third party!) coming... and this kind of launch hopefully isn't a deterrent (10 million units!).

I think the big problem is the price and availability of the game elsewhere for over a year now.
