This is the one that I have been waiting for

I hope that you have been waiting for this one too! Out of all of the decks in this box, I have the most fun playing with Nicol Bolas. It is a brutal deck that can actually make you feel bad for the things you do to your opponents. Just look for all of the destruction it can do.

I am going to add the rules of this Archenemy Nicol Bolas box at the end of the post to give a quick summary of how this sub-game works. The decks all have 60 cards and can be used in normal play, not just in this mode.

Let's get to destroying our opponents!

Nicol Bolas deck box @iamredbar

Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker

Well, as you probably imagined, this is the ultimate example of what this deck is like. Destruction. The +3 ability on Nicol Bolas is to destroy target noncreature permanent. Yes, that does mean what you think it means. Lands are valid targets. I'm serious.

The -2 ability allows you to gain control of a creature. Any creature. What is the deal with this guy? Why is he always doing mean things?

This -9 ability is the perfect example of sheer force this planeswalker has. It deals seven damage to an opponent, discards seven cards, then sacrifices seven permanents. Gulp. I've made people concede after doing this ability.

Dreadbore

This card is priceless in this deck. Two mana to destroy a creature or planeswalker. TWO. Thats it. Not much more needs to be said about this one.

Cruel Ultimatum

A truly cruel ultimatum, indeed. At a high mana cost, this card can disrupt a game entirely. Choosing which creature you have to sacrifice is bad, discarding three cards is worse, and losing five life after all that is disheartening.

Tip for playing this card: keep an eye on your opponents mana availability and their hand size. Try to play this when they are tapped out of mana or do not have a hand.

Archfiend of Depravity

Pretty decent card, especially against a deck that builds up an army quick. For five mana, this creature makes your opponent choose only two creatures to keep after their end step each turn. This will cripple any spawning tokens decks out there, or just green decks that have a ton of creatures.

"Why would I kill you all? Who then would be left to worship me?"

Archfiend of Depravity @iamredbar

Harvester of Souls

6 mana. This is a good card when you find yourself stuck drawing cards you don't want. Not much more to say about that one.

Oh yeah, wait I do have something else to say. DEATHTOUCH 5/5.

Harvester of Souls @iamredbar

Blood Tyrant

At each of your upkeeps, each player loses 1 life. Blood Tyrant gets +1/+1 for each life lost this way. Very scary very quick. And as a kicker, when a player loses, Blood Tyrant gets FIVE +1/+1 counters. Better not lose when he is on the field.

Also, just as a basic card, this is a pretty good one. Seven mana for a 5/5 flying and trample is great, but the ability makes it even better.

Quick rules of Archenemy Nicol Bolas game (summarized by myself)

  • One player is Nicol Bolas, and up to three others can be the planeswalkers Gideon, Nissa, or Chandra
  • The player that has the Nicol Bolas deck starts with 40 life and the planeswalkers start with 20 life
  • Nicol Bolas has a separate deck for schemes (I will include the scheme cards in the Nicol Bolas deck review). These scheme cards give bonuses to Nicol Bolas throughout the game. Some of these cards have lasting effects and others are only temporary
  • The three planeswalkers are all playing against Nicol Bolas. If Nicol Bolas is defeated, all three planeswalkers win. But if Nicol Bolas defeats all three planeswalkers, then that player wins.

These rules do not need to be followed, but it makes for a different and fun mode to play.

This was the last deck in the box! There will be one more post about this card box.
