Although Apple's presence in the gaming industry is impersonal and Bandai Pippin is remembered as a spoiled curiosity, it seems now that Americans have new plans in this respect.

Apple has registered a new application that extends the use of Apple TV's name for video game purposes in more than 60 countries.

Registration is interesting because Apple's original 2007 trademark applies to computer hardware, photos, music, and movies, and does not include games at all. Even when Apple introduced the fourth generation of the platform in September 2015 and it maintained games, there were no changes to the description.

Last year, Apple's 4K version of Apple TV referred to "computer games" as one of the many features of the wireless box. By comparison, the new registration this time is entirely aimed at "using Apple TV as a game console and controller," which is quite unusual.

Registration covers 60 countries around the world and makes us wonder what the giant's plans are. Apple has recently expressed interest in the potential AR gaming on iOS with the release of the ARKit software package, so it's no wonder we are seeing a new version of Apple TV targeted at gaming fans.
