My Favorite Final Fantasy
A little bit ago I had a few minutes of free time and so browsed over to YouTube, as you do, and looked over the suggested videos. Top on the list was the latest SNESWorks episodes by Jeremy Parish, a journalist I enjoy who has been making videos about Gameboy, NES, and SNES games in order of release for the past few years.
On the latest episode (which I'll embed at the end of this article) he covered Final Fantasy II, as it was known in the States at the time. Great video. It got me thinking....
What Is Your Favorite Final Fantasy Game
Final Fantasy IV, no question, which is what the correct numbering of II was, the one mentioned above that Jeremy covered.
I wouldn't put this as the best I've played. V has better game play with its job system. VI has a better story. Tactics had a great job system and nice story (when translated properly).
But IV is my favorite, mainly because it was the first Final Fantasy game that I really got into.
I was an NES kid and I played the first Final Fantasy game many times, but I never really got into it. The one time I did start to get into it, the battery failed and I lost my game, making my interest in it dwindle to almost nothing.
At the beginning of the SNES life we didn't have a great many options for games, so having rented everything else from the rental store, I took a chance on Final Fantasy IV (II) and rented it.
I fell in love with the game and played it nonstop. I made it to the Moon, if memory serves, before I had to take it back. The next weekend I rented it again. Unfortunately my save game was gone, but I was some kind of video game freak in those days, mastering games with ease†, and I was able to not only get back to where I left off within hours, but beat the game easily.
Then I started a new game and played through again.
I immediately went out and bought it. (I was only in jr high, but I had created a pretty successful lawn mowing business a year before, so I had a decent amount of money coming in). For the next few weeks I pretty much played that game exclusively and constantly, starting countless games, beating it countless times. I explored everywhere in the game, discovered every secret, figured out the best and fastest way to beat it, etc.
I had the damn thing memorized. It took over my life. In English class when we had to write a creative story, I remember using FFIV as a background to my story, as well as one or two of the characters from the game.
Eventually other games came and I moved on, but FFIV always remained one of my go to games. Whenever I was tired from school, angry about something, frustrated with something, I would go back and play that game.
These days I don't really play games. I have nothing against them, I just don't have the patience to play them anymore (or the time). Even games from my youth don't interest me that much anymore. I bought a Famicom Mini the year before last for my son. The games brought back a lot of memories and I enjoyed them for about ten minutes... but that was enough. If I went back and played FFIV now, I think I would probably react the same way.
Having said that, it was by far my favorite Final Fantasy game when I was a kid.
How about you guys? What is your favorite Final Fantasy game and why?
By the way, here is that video from Jeremy. Prepare for some nostalgia:

I know it's an extremely popular one, but I'd have to go with FF7. I think that was the first Final Fantasy I played and recall how epic it was to have a game that spanned four discs on the original Playstation. My cousin and I played the crap outta that game. I found the best materia, had my party dishing out 9,999 damage in four attacks each turn, and even defeated all the weapons (hidden, optional mega-bosses). I think it was the first game I played that had interesting characters and locations with a long narrative. I loved it and had several playthroughs.
@dbooster I did enjoy FF tactics as well, but since we're talking favorites I have to mention another game. Not really a Final Fantasy game in title yet it could technically qualify, Vagrant Story was an amazing game that really did a lot of new things for its time. Very unique gameplay with a dark overall feel in the art and story. It was a favorite despite being so dang hard I never actually beat it when I was a kid. I'd like to get ahold of it and have another try to play it through.
I know it's epic and everything but for some reason I could never get into the series :/ I have no idea what it is and I envy people that praise it and have played it so many times...lol
How did I miss this one?! Hahaha
My husband LOVES FF games (not all of them, of course) I've only played a multiplayer :D
