Well I play online at chess.com so I can only guess. When I make a mistake I simply resign. If I lose a piece or even get stuck in a bad position -- sometimes even if I lose a pawn, resign and start new game.
I also play online. When you go wrong is almost fatal, but over the board you have plenty of chances
