Teaching myself Game Development - Road to publish my first Mobile Game on PlayStore!!

Hello ladies and gentlemen

As I mentioned in my #introduceyourself post lately, beside Parkour and Free Running I am kind of an indie game developer. I would like to share a very short summary of my story about it with you fellow Steemians. Lets Start :)

Sport Injury: Start of a new passion

Last December I sprained my Ankle badly in the gym while doing Parkour. Unfortunately it was not a regular Ankle sprain which heals after couple weeks. At that time I could barely do anything, I couldn't walk for a long time and this was really depressing me. My dream was to be a stuntman and make a living from my passion. However this was a wake up call for me. I asked myself : "What if my ankel never heals again properly? What if I sprain my ankle again like that?" At that point i knew I need a plan B.

Plan B : The Second Hobby

I was always interested in Video Games and loved to watch developer blogs and updates. I also wanted to start study Game Development. However, it was only possible in an expensive private school for which I had no money. I researched about their courses and find out they work with a Game engine called "Unity" which also has a free license edition.


This was the starting signal for me. I downloaded "Unity" and started looking around by myself .The process speed was slow because of my weak GPU and it really was complicated at start- yet it was so much fun. So I started to watch the official tutorials and learn videos like crazy. I even found an old Monitor and used it as second monitor for my PC. This way I could watch tutorial on YouTube and work with the Game Engine at the same time.

After months of learning programming and experimenting with "Unity", I decided to work on my first real mobile game.


Road to Google PlayStore

My first game should have be simple because I still lack of programming skills. I decided for an endless Platformer because I really enjoy playing those kind of games on my phone. I started this project and tried to always work on it at least half an hour a day beside my daily jobs. I continue watching learn videos and implement the knowledge in my own game. It was a tough ride. Because of lack of experience and knowledge, I had to fight with many errors and searching answers in Stackoverflow.com -a Q&A website for coders. I also reached so many dead ends, yet I still was enjoying every moment working on my project. It was not like work for me, it was like a game-like a hobby.

Developer Update: Today

After 3 month I have completed the fundamental of my game. I still have a lot of thing to work on but I still want to share my progress with you. I am really excited to show it to you guys so here we go:

See Lumberyard also... But the best for me is Unreal Engine because of the blueprint sistem

Awe unity seems like fun but i don't have a run version, i keep up with UDK. Your making me thinking about switching it at least trying, thanks yo!

Hi @behar, fellow (part time) game developer and Unity user here. Best of luck with your release. My developer colleague and I have found Unity's cloud build system especially helpful for mobile development.

You are really wasting your time with Unity, i highly recommend switching over to Unreal engine 4 ASAP.

Hello calamus, can you explain me why you think i should switch?

Because besides that Unreal engine 4 is better in every way, it has a revolutionary system called blueprint visual scripting, which lets you do everything really quickly without having to write complicated code. You can even write code and make your own blueprint nodes so you hardly lose any performance.

There are thousands of videos about it online. Take a look at their official Youtube channel.
