Creating motivation from nothing

in #gamedev7 years ago (edited)

I have a problem, A motivation problem.

Programming my own game is something ive wanted to do for the last few years, and I have tried with varying degrees of success multiple times during this time period but I keep dropping projects due to lack of motivation.

The most common way this works is...

  • Something grabs my interest (i.e. cool new game i play on Steam)
  • I play around with ideas in my head for a few days
  • I fire up a code editor and make some prototypes
  • I start fleshing out something more playable
  • I get bogged down with very specific things (performance issues, algorithm choices etc etc)
  • I read other game dev blogs and am ashamed at how slow my progress is
  • I lose interest

Should i keep trying?

Have you tried something like BuildBox to quickly test game ideas and get something launched quick before the self doubt creeps in?

Always keep trying.. And don't compare yourself to projects from other people. They all started with a little, not very good project. You need time to learn.

Try to stick on one idea, make some sketches (paper sketches! Diffrent prototypes, think about what you want to reach and how difficult it may be, and then start with the easiest, so you could see some progress that can help stay motivated.. Make plans, like when do you want to reach which stage of the project.. Track your successes and failings.. )

You could also try to share your work with other people, maybe even people who don't know how to code - they will be impressed even by the little things ;) should help to get some feelings of pride too, so you know somebody appreciate your work and it's not worthless :p if you need that

As time flies by you will continue to make progress, and be able to try the more complex tasks to reach your goal..

.. Just some thoughts that may help, but could be completely bullshit for you, too :D trying to help
