Gamedev road 2020, pre-project priorities

in #gamedev5 years ago (edited)

A commercially viable game that should be at least 60% completed by the end of 2020. This is my project.

What and how

Even if I want to make a game as my personal project, I aim for the next semi-big thing which will entertain as many players as possible while bringing in some money.

Since right now I'm an amateur looking to develop a game that needs to bring me profit, this means...

The game must be mobile-only or, at the very least, mobile-friendly. And it will be freemium so as many people as possible can easily start playing it. Core game will be free to play, but players will be able to pay for cosmetics, extras and anything else that is not pay-to-win.

Appealing to a casual audience is a must, but without going overboard with it so players don't easily lose their engagement. So something heavy on gameplay like freefire but not tailored specifically for the competitive mindset.

What type of game will it be? Platformer, RPG, or what? Trying to predict what genres will be popular in the near future within my development pre-requisites will dictate the style of what I'm going to create.

Payment methods must cover every player's pocket, so the game must feature from paypal to crypto to reward ads to purchase ingame cash.

Cashing out will not be a thing however, just like most traditional games out there. People should be playing my game in order to have fun, not make money. I am making an actual game afterall.

I will be capable of programming everything I need within the game making engine of my choice (GameMake Studio 1.4), but outsourcing art assets is the way to go since I am not an artist. That would take too much of my time.

Final list

  • Commercially viable game
  • Make good progress through 2020
  • Mobile-friendly or mobile only
  • Freemium
  • Not pay to win
  • Pay for cosmetics and/or DLC
  • Engaging gameplay
  • Appeal to the casual crowd
  • Try to predict ideal genre
  • Allow players to make purchases using paypal, crypto and reward ads
  • Like most traditional games, no cashouts, gameplay is the focus
  • Game engine is GameMaker Studio 1.4
  • Outsource art assets
