GAMEDEV 008: So the game was Greenlit, What have we been up to since then? [Wormhole Ventures]

in #gamedev9 years ago (edited)

Version 6 of the game design has been slowly being constructed for quite some time off and on. We actually had stopped working on it much and were moving onto a much more ambitious project when we received the message it had been greenlit. This happened a few weeks before I discovered steem and steemit.com. I've been a bit distracted since then to say the least.

We are current

Any gamedev blogs about Wormhole Ventures at this point will be current. These are current developer blogs and posting them should help inspire me to keep pushing forward.

Where we were at pre-greenlight:

  • Completely redone character/avatar art
  • Vast amount of the UI are redone for a new approach. Not yet implemented in code.
  • In house level editor - not likely to be released to the public anytime soon
  • Designed as multiplayer from ground up, even when playing single player it treats it as a client/server configuration
  • Host, and Join servers with the randomized map and background successfully being shared.
  • Two alien races planned by design
  • Image File system for combining 3D assets, particles, and 2D into a single performance friendly image at runtime
  • Expanded infestation
  • More sounds, More Art, more of everything...

What happened when we were greenlit?

We signed a big NDA and can't go into details of what goes on behind the scenes but it did open a wealth of opportunities to explore with their large Steam API with many features.

I began reworking the code to use Steam's built in Peer to Peer networking with the idea of completely being able to support inviting friends from your friends list and hosting games the way so many games are natively hosted on Steam. This requires some work on my backend networking code. I had that more or less handled and needing testing when I discovered steemit.

@theanubisrider kept working on his tasks and has converted all the ship sprites to instead be 2 triangle rectangular planes in 3D that we then can use an atlas with and still use things like Normal Maps, Height Maps, Illumination Maps, Occlusion Maps, etc. This will make the ships in the game appear more 3D and actually respond to lighting situations as though they were 3D while still being performance friendly.

Congrats on being greenlit! That's awesome. I've come to love these indie games more than the big name publisher ones. It's like gorilla tactics here and you can see that you guys get to make the games you really want to rather than the same hand-holding shoot-em-up game constantly being sold.

Yes, and I was REALLY bad about blogging any progress. I don't care for twitter or facebook. Steemit though I am addicted to.

Can't wait for it. YOu are doing amazing work man. Just keep doing that and help steem community to grow and become more rich and interesting. Keep sharing the progress

We plan to maybe tie steem into the game in some way if we can.

That would be great. It will also help in enhancing user experience too :)
