[TUTORIAL] How to make sound effects for my game?
Introduction
Many people need sound effects for their games or projects. Most of them downloads it from freesound.or website, but in this post you will learn how to make easily sound effects on your computer! It will be perfect for pixel-art/retro games, as it has 16-bit sound.
Tool
We will be using BFXR - tool than can be used online but is downloadable as well. I prefer to download it, so you don't need to download your sound all the time. Here is the homepage of this project: http://www.bfxr.net/
It's open-source, here's the code:
- https://github.com/increpare/bfxr release branch
- https://github.com/increpare/bfxr/tree/dev development branch (very unstable)
- https://github.com/increpare/bfxr-airAIR-specific code/li>
Here is download:
How to use it?
Left sidebar
On the left side there are default sound effects categories. When you click on one of them, new synth will appear on the list. That new sound will be created with parameters adjusted for it's cattegory, so for instance, jump synth will sound like jump effect from mario game etc. There is also randomize button and in this category the sfx will be totally random. The mutation selection changes a little bit current current sound effect and makes new of it.
A little bit lower there is our SFX list. You can select one and then duplicate it or edit it (in the middle bar).
Middle bar (SYNTH TAB)
On the top of middle bar, there are two tabs: SYNTH and MIX. Firstly let me write about SYNTH. Here you can adjust your sound effect. Have your time on playing with all these sliders, there's a lot of fun with it.
Middle bar (MIX TAB)
Here is pretty cool tool. You can mix synth that you already made. You can connect different synths. When you select few synths, you can adjust them at time-line, change their volume and reverse them. It's powerfull, because you are able to create totally unique sound effect!
Right sidebar
On the right sidebar you can find simple visualiser of sound when it's played, PLAY button, adjust volume of current SFX and exporting options. You can export your sound effect by selecting EXPORT option.
I think the program is simple enough for people to explore it on their own.
ENDING
That's it, now you can make own retro sound effect.
